Catching Up
Characters: Adam and Mazie
Setting: morning, Mazie’s room
Adam left Kyle with a smile heading towards his room, taking the stairs two at a time. He had a mission of a shower and breakfast, but he slowed when he spotted Mazie’s door cracked and he slowed his pace. He knocked on it and then leaned inside not thinking about the fact that his clothes were rumpled and looked like he’d slept in them, but looking for her. “Maze?”
Mazie had been staring at her computer screen, watching Plants Versus Zombies play the opening screen over and over again. She didn’t even want to play it, really, but it would keep her from trying to mess with that camera code again and she’d promised not to touch it so she had to do something.
Looking up, she let a feeling of relief wash through her when she saw Adam. There he was, looking...happy, which was more than what she’d been told to look out for lately, and in some rumpled clothing. That, to her, didn’t really mean much because Mazie didn’t much care for keeping her own clothing nice, but the attitude was something to note. “Hey! I was gonna come find you later today. Get your ass in here. Where’ve you been lately?”
Adam grinned a little and let himself into the room, look at her, then the screen. “Later today I’d be down at work, but as for where...all over? A stint in the cells down in the basement. And I slept at Kyle’s last night.” He dropped on the couch in her room, stretching out a little only to notice how slept in his clothes looked, which left him trying to flatten the wrinkles out.
That had Mazie pulling back a little and turning in her chair to watch Adam from his spot. “Ok, reverse that and explain. Both parts, the cells part and the Kyle’s part.” She waited for another moment, face screwed up in thought, and then added. “And promise me right now that we aren’t gonna go this long without talking because apparently shit happens real quick around here. So we need like...check-in times.”
“You’re usually busy,” Adam pointed out raising an eyebrow. “I got in a fight. A bad one, I lost, which is probably the better part of the story. But like, right after, Wu put in the rule where anyone who got in a fight had to spend the night in detention so I got locked up, then went to the jury.” He shrugged a little. “I got some extra security shifts unpaid and I’m not supposed to start fights anymore, but it’s not a huge deal because the guy isn’t here anymore.” There was way more to the story, but he figured he’d give Mazie the basics then let her ask questions.
“As for Kyle...” He looked at his hands and found himself shrugging again. “I don’t know. We waver in and out of good and bad, but...like a few nights ago, Wren was over and I had a nightmare and she woke me up, and we wound up falling back asleep in the same bed. And slept. Like...really slept.” Mazie knew how big of a deal that was. “And the other night Kyle...offered to stay. And then last night he fell asleep watching the movie and I just...stayed.” And the thought of sleeping alone sounded miserable, but Adam didn’t want to get into that. He and Kyle were friends, strictly friends, and to test it was probably asking for trouble.
Where the fuck had she been? With her nose stuffed in this computer screen or in Autumn’s room when she wasn’t here. She needed to be a better friend, make more choices to go and leave and actually see Adam. “Ok, so first of all, the next time you get in a fight, you’d better come find me first. I’d kick some ass with you. And secondly, did you beat the hell out of that guy so hard that they had to take him out? Who was it?”
She listened to Adam again and stilled, eyes widening a little before her lips shifted into a smile. “Hey, look at you, sleeping and all. That’s great, Adam. I’m really happy for you. You keep doing it, ok? And if we need to get everyone in a big pile in one room together to help, then that’s what we do.”
“Well, it wasn’t a planned thing. I was thinking he might have hurt Becka and then he mostly said that I was the one that was responsible for her being vulnerable and I just...yeah lost it.” Laughing a little, he shook his head. “Hardly, he kicked my ass. The administration just added that into the note they already sent me. Said they thought I should know.”
He blushed a little and shook his head. “It’s not like a thing, thing yet. I’ve had a few days when I was going days without sleeping. But I guess it’s getting better.”
“Who was it?” Mazie asked again, pretty sure she’d definitely not paid attention to Adam getting in a fight and especially not with who. She needed to be better at this. She tilted her head a little at his blush, though, and grinned after a moment. “Must be getting better, you’re smiling and not all jumpy right now. That’s a good thing. So maybe this whole sleeping with Kyle thing is a good answer for that. You should tell him you want to do it more.”
“Ryan,” Adam said, disdain in his voice. “I guess I’m getting there. It’s been a good couple of days...” He leaned his head back and made a small noise. “I want to, but...after telling him that I like him...it’s not quite the same making those sort of requests.”
“Ryan...” She made a face. “Only met him once and I got a weird feeling from him then....” She trailed off for a moment, watching Adam and then grinning, got up and rushed to his side to plop down beside him. “I knew it! How’d he take it?”
“You did not know it,” Adam said rolling his eyes as she dropped next to him. “You just...teased me about possibly liking him when I wasn’t even sure if I did.” He looked at his hands, frowning more. “He’s...not interested. He just wants to be friends. And he’s still my best friend just not interested in being more.” Which had just made everything all the more complicated between them.
“I did so know it,” She said, but her grin fell when she heard the next part. “Hey, that doesn’t mean he won’t be interested later. How can he not be with a face like that?” She asked, nudging his side with her elbow. She was bad at giving this advice, especially when she really just watched to march down to Kyle and shake him until he said he liked Adam, but that wasn’t a good idea either.
Adam bit his lip, hating that Mazie saw it so simply. “He just...can’t. I don’t know if he will. Sometimes I think yeah, but others...I think I’m getting my hopes up and he just won’t. He’s just not interested. I’m nothing like Leandro and not just looks you know? Maybe I’m not it for him.”
Mazie made a face, looking back from Adam to the door. Maybe she should go have a heart to heart with Kyle right now. Or maybe she should keep that to herself and find Kyle later, when it probably wouldn’t freak Adam out because she wouldn’t feel it necessary to tell him if he wasn’t right beside her. “He’s gonna come around. Maybe he just doesn’t realize it yet.”
“I think me telling him I like him should have been an indicator right?” he asked, not entirely sure Kyle would. And hating that he really wanted him to. He wanted Kyle to come around, to like him just as much as he liked the other man.
“No, not about you, about him. He doesn’t know that he likes you yet.” That had to be it. Mazie wasn’t sure she could really come to terms with a world where someone who Adam liked didn’t like him back. She wanted so much for him to just be happy, for him to have a chance to look like he had looked when he first came in here more often.
Adam looked over at her. “I don’t think it’s that simple,” he said softly. He wanted it to be, but it wasn’t. “Thanks though.”
She squeezed his arm a little. “We’ll see,” She said, looking back over at the computers. “You wanna go get some food? Or hang out here and watch a movie or something with me?” It’d been too long for her and she wasn’t ready to let Adam go just yet.
“I need a shower,” Adam said looking at himself again. “Though I could go for food after that.” He got it, not wanting to spend too much time apart. They hadn’t had time for one another lately. Leaning over he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and gave her a squeeze. “It’s a little belated, but it should count towards the credits right?”
Mazie grinned again, returning the hug because it was Adam and there were two people she hugged in this place and he was one of them. “I think it counts. If not, I can try and figure out how to cheat the system. It’s my favorite pastime, you know,” She said, standing up and pulling on his hand. “We’re going to your room. You’re gonna shower and I’m gonna make sure that we actually get food, because whenever one of us leaves this room, we don’t see each other for days and I’m putting an end to that.”
“Hey, I didn’t hug Kyle until well after we’d been awake for a while. I figure I’ll find out eventually.” He got up and held out a hand to her. “If you weren’t hooking up with one of the prettiest girls in this place, that would sound totally different, but I follow.”
She started toward the door after making a brief stop at her desk to grab her laptop. “C’mon, your place.” She said again, laughing a little. “‘One of’ is not the right thing to say, just so you know. It’s really ‘the’.”
Adam shrugged. “Probably ‘the’, but I don’t want to discredit you or Wren. I could get into trouble for that.” He rolled his eyes when she grabbed her computer, but led the way back to his room nonetheless.
“Me you can write right out of that equation. I don’t remember to shower,” She said plainly. “Autumn is the prettiest girl here. You can take that to the bank. Sure all the other girls here are nice and pretty on their own or whatever, but I don’t much give a shit about any of them.” Heading with him to his room, Mazie tucked her laptop under her arm as she walked. “Save your eye rolls for someone else,” She said, nudging him with her elbow as she walked. For now, she could at least be happy she was finally getting some time with Adam.
