Turning Himself In
Characters: Adam, Evan, and Jae Setting: Detention, evening
Adam left Becka, feeling a little down in the dumps and headed towards the basement and the detention area. He could hear the music from the bar, but that wasn’t where he was headed. Not when he had twelve hours of waiting waiting on him. He didn’t look any better, probably worse as the bruises had had more time to set, purple around his lip and eye and though they couldn’t be seen, across his abdomen too.
Looking around the detention area he spotted a guy there and waved. “Hey. I jumped a guy and am here for my detention.”
Evan wasn't in the best of moods, though it didn't have anything to do with having to be there. When the guy came in, he noted that he looked like jumping a guy hadn't been the wisest of choices. Either way, he got up, nodded toward the cells, and dug the keys out of his pocket. "Looks like it was a dumb idea." he commented.
“Obviously,” Adam quipped, rolling his eyes, but that kind of hurt his head slightly. He followed after the guy, not really sure who he was, but he was bigger than Adam, which made Adam figure he was better suited for this job of running the jail than he was. “I should know better, but he pissed me off. Though ‘jumped’ is a little harsh since I only got a couple shoves and a punch in.” And then Ryan had kicked his ass.
"Have you been checked out by the doc, or nurse or whatever? Because you look like shit." Evan said, not actually unkindly. Adam wasn't exactly an imposing figure and did in fact look like he'd had his ass handed to him.
Adam shook his head. “Nah, but I’ll survive. I’ve had worse and put some ice on the worst of it.” He looked inside the cell, feeling his insides sink at the sight of it. He didn’t think it would be a bad idea, but seeing it? That was like reliving some of his worst memories. There was a no way he was letting himself sleep. “Hey,” he said turning back towards Evan. “Can you call Jae, the cop or whatever we’re calling them in here?” He needed to talk to her, about Ryan.
"Yeah." Evan said, stepping back and not pushing Adam into the cell or anything, but just waiting for him to go in. He was feeling weird about all of this, and was re-thinking his role here. Not that he didn't have the stomach for it, just...he didn't even know. Something was off for him. "I'll call her for you."
Adam hesitated for a moment longer, feeling sick to his stomach before he finally stepped himself into the cell. This was a whole lot worse than he thought. A whole lot. “Thanks,” he managed, but it was belated. He should have said something sooner. Instead he was concentrating on not throwing up. “Oh!” he said turning, looking back at Evan. “I’ve got diabetes. You should know that if I’m going to be in here.”
Evan stopped after shutting the door. “Is there anything specific I need to know? Are you going to need anything?” he asked, not knowing much about diabetes at all. Weren’t there more than one type? Shit. But he wanted to know everything he would need to now. Even if he was feeling weird about all of this, that didn’t mean he was going to half ass the situation. Especially with a guy who got beat to hell and was apparently diabetic.
The door shutting was unsettling. Adam would have been miserable in that moment if he hadn’t remembered that Kyle was coming or might be coming. That would help. He stared at the bars and then looked up at Evan waiting a moment then shook his head when the question registered. “No. I mean...I should eat something later, but I have everything I need for the moment. And if something goes really wrong, call Cal.”
"I wasn't really thinking I was going to starve anyone." Evan said, thinking that being locked up inside another prison was just a little too fucked up. He wouldn't be too catering, but he wasn't going to deny people anything like food or water or anything, either. "If you need anything in the meantime, just let me know." he added.
Adam nodded, looking around the cell and trying to figure out what he was going to do with himself before wound up just leaning on the bars. “Just calling Jae,” he said then frowned. “And maybe tell me your name? I don’t know that.”
"Asher." Evan told him. "I'll call Jae." Which he'd never met. But oh well. He headed to the desk to get on the computer and figure out how to call people. It wasn't hard, though, and he got Jae on the phone rather quickly. She opted to come right away to see Adam.
Jae got there really quickly, fine with catering to anyone who requested her presence. She nodded at the jailer guy, then headed back to the cells which she was now quite well acquainted with. “Hello.” she greeted Mr. Balboa. Because that kid looked like he’d gone a round or two in the ring. “You wanted to see me?”
Asher. What the hell kind of name was that? Adam thought it but didn’t ask, letting the guy go and found himself waiting uncomfortably until Jae was there and he was able to focus on her instead. “Jae?” he asked, but figured that was obvious. “I did...you’re the one who’s looking into what happened to Becka right?”
She nodded when he confirmed her identity. "We all are, really, but yes. I was involved in things pretty early." Jae said. Like, pre-job early. "Do you have information?" she asked. Or maybe he was going to confess--but she highly doubted that.
“Kinda? I have a bad feeling. Which is sort of why I supposedly jumped a guy,” Adam said, staying close to the bars so he wouldn’t have to be in the cell properly. “Ryan. I don’t trust the guy. And he was all friendly with Becka before the black out, like when swimming with her and helped her to her room when she got drunk once...it just doesn’t add up. And he was in her room. When he got locked up in the stocks or whatever, he was in her room. And Wren’s.”
Jae had known about the room thing. And it didn’t help that she didn’t trust Ryan as far as she could throw him either. But she kept it off of her features as she listened. “What doesn’t add up for you?” she asked, wanting Adam to really get into it. She was a believer in instincts, even if she knew the wouldn’t be of any use whatsoever in this place. But she still wanted to know what his deal may be.
Adam frowned, thinking hard. “He just...he’s there. And when I talked to him, he...he acted like he didn’t do anything wrong. He was there and he was in her room and he got put in the stocks for some reason, but he had this attitude the like Administration screwed him. Sure the stocks were weird and barbaric, but they had a reason right? And he was there all day. I mean...that’s just weird. I don’t...I don’t like that he snuck in her room and then he was all friendly with her. It’s creepy and weird and I’ve spent time with crazy people and that’s how they think.” None of it was real evidence, but he was on guard with the guy enough to throw a punch and Kyle had said it was important to point it out, so here he was pointing it out.
"Go on." Jae encouraged. She was taking it all in. She hadn't had anything to do with Ryan since she'd talked to him when he was in the stocks, so any new interactions were important for her to hear. At least, she thought so. “No judgments or anything. Lay it all out there. I’m listening.”
“He snuck into her and Wren’s rooms to check on them. And he scared both of them. Maybe not Becka as much as it should because she’s forgiving, but Wren definitely. And the guy who hurt Becka, he did the same thing. At least when I was attacked I knew who did it. I can’t imagine...” Adam sighed and ran his hand over his hair, feeling the scars even if they were starting to be covered by the new hair growing in. “I don’t trust him. Which is why we got in the fight. I shoved him and told him to keep his hands off Becka and eventually threw a punch. Then he ‘defended himself’.” The last part was sarcastic and paired with a wave to his face, which looked like hell.
Jae had to admit, Adam's injuries didn't look like self defense, they looked like he'd gone quite a few rounds there, and lost. Badly. But she didn't say it, because that was biased, and even if she knew she was she had to keep in mind she wasn't meant to be. "Thank you for talking about it. If you can think of anything at all that adds in here, please let me know immediately." she said. "...you need any painkillers, Rocky?"
"Yeah I can do that," Adam said with a nod. He wanted to give her more now, but that was all he had. "And yeah. I could use something. My head hurts," he admitted, trying to be tough, but there was a sort of a dull ache lingering. There was a pause and then he was looking back at Jae again. "You're not going to stop looking now are you? Now that she's leaving?"
"No. I'm not." Jae said, looking Adam straight in the eye when she said it. The had nothing, but she knew she'd never forget about it. "I'll go get you some painkillers. If you need anything else, let people know." People had to be in the cells, but she kinda felt for the kid. He looked like hell.
Adam felt better at the reassurance, nodding. "Good." When she said she'd get him painkillers he nodded again, looking back into the cell and feeling his stomach twist again. "Thanks. I will."
