Repairing
Who: Autumn and Mazie
When: Afternoon
Where: Mazie's room
Mazie had conked out after her night patrol and was only just now waking up. She didn’t really check the computer, instead actually going to the bathroom first and starting the water running for a shower. She wasn’t real jazzed about the idea of taking a shower right now, but it would help keep her away from that computer for a little bit longer. She had a decision to make, she was due an answer to Rusty today, basically, but if she could get away a little longer without being near her computer, she was definitely going to try. Even when the shower was over and she was back in her main room, dressed in sweat pants and tank top with her damp hair up in a bun, she kept casting glances over to her desktop and laptop without really moving over to them.
In an effort to keep her hands busy, she knelt by the pile of clothing that had amassed on her floor, sniffing out which was really dirty and which could possibly be worn again. She had yet to do laundry here and it was probably about time, if the washers were fixed. She never actually cared enough to check.
Autumn knocked on Mazie's door, and stood back, waiting for the other girl to answer. She was tired, having not slept great, though not really for any particular reason. She knew it was time to see Mazie, however, and she'd meant to the night before, even. Hopefully, it was still all good, and they could move ahead.
Mazie wasn't expecting anyone so the knock on her door confused her. But when she opened the door and Autumn was there, it took Mazie a moment of just watching her before she spoke. Autumn was here. Autumn was here and hopefully it was a good thing. "Hey," She said, smiling a little because no matter what was happening, it was still good to see her. She stepped to the side, holding the door open with her back, and this time when she looked back at Autumn, she noticed the same look on Autumn that Mazie often had after a restless night on her computer. "Wanna come in?"
"I do." Autumn said, returning the smile. She walked in, and saw...that it was a mess in there, as per usual with Mazie. It also had a bit of a funk to it. "...sweetie, you need to open a window, and...clean things." she said, glancing around. She spotted a laundry basket, and started to pick up dirty clothes from the floor to throw into it.
Mazie frowned as Autumn went straight for her pile of clothes. Closing the door, she followed her. "I was doing that…" She said, watching her start to pile things into the laundry basket. Moving around so she was closer to Autumn's side, Mazie reached out and put a hand on her arm. "Autumn, stop. I was doing that and you didn't come here to do my laundry. Or at least I hope you didn't."
Autumn did stop, but looked up to Mazie to give her a bit of a look. "Yeah, these are all on the floor." she said. "So, if you were 'doing that', then you hadn't got to the part yet where you actually do things." she pointed out. "And, no, it isn't why I came here. But it also bothers me to come to your room and get swatted in the face with some...odors. You're a beautiful girl. Treat yourself like you are." she told her, not actually chiding. More encouraging.
"I literally was doing that, right before you knocked on the door. The basket is there to put the laundry in. I didn't just make that up to get you to stop…" Mazie was pretty sure she didn't want to be having their first conversation since the last one, the one that did not go so well, over dirty laundry. "If you want to go somewhere else and talk, let's do it, but just...don't worry about my laundry." The laundry, now, seemed like a very trivial thing to talk about considering there were some pretty important topics she'd prefer to talk with Autumn about.
"Fine." Autumn conceded, sighing as she stood up, walking to the windows to at least crack one. "Did you want to go someplace else? Or...?" she prompted, not sure what the game plan was.
Mazie watched Autumn move and sighed. "I want to go wherever you're going to be the most comfortable, so we can talk." Because Autumn had to have come here to say some things, right? At the very least, Mazie had some things to say and she wasn't going to give up the opportunity in favor of disagreeing over the state of her room.
Autumn let her gaze rest on Mazie for a long moment, before she drew in a breath, and let it out slowly. "Mazie," she started. "This isn't a drill. I'm not here to lecture. I'm not here to sit down and talk with a capital T. I'm aware there's some things to discuss, and everything, but you're kinda making me feel at the moment like Daddy's home, and spankings are going to be handed out any minute. Can we relax, please?" she asked. "And maybe not concentrate so much on me being 'comfortable' so we can talk? I'm comfortable. It's fine."
Maybe Autumn wasn't here to sit down and Talk, but Mazie had some things she wanted to say. She didn't want to sit around here and talk about the laundry or the weather or whatever if the whole time she knew she had this stuff in the back of her mind to talk about. But the last thing she wanted to do was run Autumn off again, so Mazie took a moment before she turned to look at Autumn. She could try it her way first, even if it didn't help her feel less anxious. "So where do we start, then?"
"I have no idea, but can we try to make it less..." Autumn made a vague gesture. "...super dramatic?" She sighed. "While I get that there's stuff to talk about and stuff, this feels very heavy, and very stiff, and very not us." she said. "So, how about you just...start. Go for whatever you want, say what you've got to say, and I won't say a word til you've got it all on the table."
Less dramatic. She might be able to do that. Mazie did kind of know that she had to be putting off a serious, dramatic air between the way she felt and the way Autumn was speaking. Taking a moment, she nodded her head as she tried to get her thoughts together and ended up going to her bed to sit on it cross-legged, but facing the opposite end of it in case Autumn wanted to join her.
Don't make it weird. You've already made it really weird, don't make it weirder. "Uhm..Ok, so…I made you a mix because I thought the songs would make you happy. And after I made you that mix, I went and talked to some friends about the thing, you know, with the computers…and I want you to know that I understand that it makes you uncomfortable. And that when I say the next part I just…I hope you know that I'm not disregarding how this makes you feel..or at least I'm not trying to. It's all I think about every time I think about this… But for me, going forward with this is something I feel like I need to do. I don't want to do it at the expense of making you upset or anything, but there's something in me that just makes me feel like I have to get this done. And I have a couple of different options for it, but I want to know your opinion. Because it matters to me. You're the first person outside of myself that I really give a shit about how you feel."
She took one moment to gather her breath again, then, "So I was thinking that with this, I would like to limit the..scope I guess to public areas only, so the hallways, the laundry room, the kitchen…because I really don't care what happens in someone's room, but if there's someone out there attacking and threatening everyone, then maybe there could at least be some proof to keep us all safer if we could just monitor those public spaces. And if you think it's a good idea, I might go speak with Wu about it too. I know that it's not a great idea to keep adding people into the mix here, but he might want the help. But…I'm jumping forward because I just said I wanted to know how you feel about this so I'm gonna shut up now and let you talk."
When Mazie mentioned the music, Autumn smiled, a soft expression. "I really loved the songs." she told her, though didn't interrupt her further until she was done. She took on board everything that was said, really let it sink in, even if she was unsurprised by Mazie's decision, there. She'd pretty much known that it was going to go this way. So, surprised she was not.
"If you're doing this, then I think you do need to discuss it with Wu." Autumn said. "How I feel is...this is dangerous. And I also feel like I kinda doubt you can tap into just some of the cameras. You'd still have access to everything else. Just because you won't abuse it doesn't mean other people wouldn't. But, I understand that you feel like you have to do this, so, I've been prepared for you to say that."
Mazie listened, wanting to give Autumn the same respect she’d given her. She did smile when Autumn said she liked the music, since she’d been hoping as much. She nodded a little here and there and when Autumn seemed to come to a natural close, Mazie waited a moment longer just to be sure.
“This could be dangerous. I’ll agree with you on that. I know it means I’m playing with fire, but I still think I need to do this. There are too many variables being left up to them and with everything that’s going on, all the crazy that’s happening, I just don’t feel like they’re doing enough to keep us safe on their own. They’ve already given us the power by allowing the self-governing thing and in a normal circumstance, outside of this place, maybe I wouldn’t want to do this. But here I just think a little extra security isn’t a bad thing. But I know asking you to be ok with it isn’t right and I don’t want to ask you to feel a different way about it. I just..I guess I hope that even if I do this with the way you feel about it, that we can still try and be like we were.”
"I'm willing to try." Autumn told her, honestly. She wasn't interested in just...not. In ending things now, just because things got a little difficult. Normally she might have, but this wasn't a normal situation. And she didn't really want to do anything differently. So, she was willing to try.
Willing to try was good, but she wished it was more, even though she knew it was unfair to hope for that right now. They'd been snuggled together in bed not too long ago and now Mazie wasn't really sure how to get back to that place, even though that was exactly where she wanted to be. "Well…would it help to do something without computers? Go…down to the pool or the bar or something? Maybe…I guess normal people go on dates, huh? We could do a date here, I think." And maybe a date would give them a chance to focus on each other again, because there was a lot about Autumn that Mazie already missed being able to focus on.
Autumn smiled. "Well, I did want to throw a party. So, maybe you can come help me set up for that? Or we can just look at the space, and have a drink, and go from there." she suggested.
“I’ll definitely help you set up for a party. And maybe we could get a couple of drinks after that, during the party? The last time we thought about drinking together was at the pool and I’d rather that not be the only time we try to have drinks, you know?” And if they had a chance to do that, Mazie could step it up, be presentable and be ready to work on getting back what she and Autumn had had before. She missed being closer to her, missed being able to wake up next to her, and the sooner she could start trying to rebuild this, the better.
Grinning, Autumn looked pleased. "Then it's a plan. And after that, a date." she added, just to be clear there. "Want to meet me down there in a little bit?" she asked. "You can finish your laundry gathering, and I can figure out what the hell I should bring from the crafts bins to the bar?"
Mazie grinned back, bubbling with excitement at the prospect of something good between them again. "Whenever you want. If you want to wait, I'll help you carry stuff down from the craft room. Might not be great at figuring out what to bring but I can be a good pack mule when I want to be." And she definitely would be for Autumn.
Autumn laughed. "You've only got two arms, and I'm perfectly capable." she said, showing off a bicep. She winked. "I'll meet you down there. Don't forget your laundry." Because she needed to wash her clothes. Very much needed to.
The wink did her in, really. It was this kind of easiness, this kind of flirting that Mazie wanted to get back to. Smiling, she nodded. “I’m going to do that right now,” She promised regarding the laundry, wanting to actually look nice for Autumn and not smell like a gym locker instead. Especially if there was a date involved.
"Good." Autumn said warmly. "See you there." she said, heading for the door. When she got there, she did turn back to blow Mazie a kiss. She knew it would help Mazie feel better. And she wanted to make this less and less awkward.
Mazie smiled at the kiss and took in the image of Autumn for a moment, just there by her door and looking somewhat happy with her. It was a nice image and one she wanted to see more often, so she had some strides to make. They’d acknowledged the big elephant in the room, now it was just time to figure out how to maneuver around it.
