Twenty Questions
Characters: Jason and Mazie
Setting: Block B, 2am
Jason was sort of glad he had volunteered for patrol. He might as well try and be useful here. And since he was a bit of a night owl, Jason was more than awake enough to handle patrolling the Block. Actually, he was kind of wired. Well, at least he wouldn’t be getting tired. Now all he had to do was find this Mazie that he was supposed to be paired up with. He didn’t know her, but then again, given the hour, there weren’t that many people out and about. It couldn’t be that hard to find her, even given the size of the Block. Tucking his hands into his pockets, he wandered his way through the farm, keeping an eye out for Mazie, enjoying the cooler night air.
Mazie wasn’t extremely happy to be patrolling the B Block, considering she’d had some not so great luck there recently. So even though it was dark, she found herself looking over in the direction of that damn tree, the one that had housed a noose for her and Autumn, the one that probably was still carved. She forced herself not to go there, though, and instead start towards the only other body-shaped person she saw. “Hey,” She greeted, hands in the pocket of her sweatpants as she approached.
At the greeting, Jason turned to the woman approaching him. “Hi. You Mazie?” he asked, smiling slightly. It was a reasonable assumption, but then again, it could always just be someone who – like him – was a night owl and was still up and about despite the late – or early, depending on your point of view – hour. If this woman was Mazie, hopefully the two of them could find something in common, or at least something to talk about, otherwise this would be a very long patrol.
“That’d be me,” Mazie said, smiling a little as she came closer, still making the effort to be more sociable. “Guessing you’re Jason. So...we’re patrol-mates.” Looking around, Mazie didn’t see any other movement in the general area. “So do we start here and just kind of..work our way around or what?”
“Got it in one,” Jason answered, grinning. Granted, he didn’t know of too many other reasonable guesses she could have made about who he was, but… That didn’t really matter. “And I guess it’s as good a place to start as any. As long as we cover the whole area, I don’t think the order matters much.” Or at least, he didn’t think it did. Granted, they hadn’t exactly been given many specifics about what they were supposed to do. So he assumed that, as long as they followed the few guidelines they had been given, the rest was up to them. “Unless you would prefer to start somewhere else? Doesn’t matter to me.
“We’re already here, let’s just start here,” Mazie said, looking around again before starting off in the direction she really wanted to go anyway, toward that tree. If she had to cover all the ground, she might as well get that over with now so she could stop worrying about it. “So, why’d you volunteer for patrol duty?”
When Mazie picked a direction, Jason followed without complaint. Hell, they had to cover the whole area anyway. Arguing about where to start seemed like it would be a waste of time. “Figured I might as well make myself useful,” he answered, even though he kept most of his attention focused around them instead of directly on her. “I’m kind of a night owl, so I’m normally up this late anyway. Plus, I get bored easily, and this was something to do. And if it helps to keep people from getting hurt or something, then even better.” He glanced over at her before asking, “What about you? What made you volunteer?”
“Same reasons, I guess. I’m awake now usually, I’m pissed that someone is terrorizing us into the makings of a bad horror movie, and if I can stop them from doing it again, I might as well give it a shot.” She looked back over at Jason, crossing her arms as she walked. “What’re you usually doing at 2 am?”
“I was thinking more along the lines of bad reality show, but horror movie works too. Either way, I agree with you about making sure it doesn’t happen again.” So far, most of the people he had meant had seemed to feel the same way. Which made Jason wonder if it was someone that he hadn’t yet met doing these things, or if he was just really that bad a judge of character. Rather than spend too much time worrying about that though – because he knew that doing so would lead to nothing useful – he instead answered Mazie’s question. “Depends. I’ll work out in the gym most of the time. Other than that… Whatever I can find to entertain myself with. I’ve started reading some, but my attention span isn’t generally long enough to do that for very long.”
Mazie gave him a look as they walked. "You work out until 2 am but you don't have the attention span to read? You and I are very different, Jason," She said, shaking her head. This body hadn't seen a proper work out in years and she didn't exactly mean to, either, unless it was for those self defense classes Brady had mentioned. "Can you explain to me the draw of workin' out? Because I just don't get it."
“Saying until 2am makes it sound like I’ll go all day working out. It’s more like… Just an hour or two. Maybe from midnight until 2, or something, depending on the day,” Jason pointed out. Still, he couldn’t help but grin when she said that they were different. Yeah, by the look she had given him, he could have guessed that. So when she asked him to explain why he enjoyed working out, he took a moment to think about his answer. “A lot of it comes from having energy to burn, I guess. I’ll get fidgety otherwise. Then I really wouldn’t be able to sleep. So I work out. It’s… Well, I don’t know if I’d say fun, but it’s enjoyable. And it lets me work through my extra energy. Which is what I like about it: the physical activity part of it.” He shrugged then, because it was kind of hard to explain.
“So going by your statement, I’m going to assume you aren’t up working out normally, so what are you doing instead?” Jason asked, curious.
"My energy at 2 am or..well anytime, really, is directed at my computer. Working out at midnight, not so much. Coding, definitely." Mazie shrugged a little. "I guess it's a 'to each their own' sort of deal, but I just don't get the working out thing. I guess I never really did." Looking back at Jason, Mazie gave him a small grin. "But someone's gotta do it, right? Just like someone's gotta be stuck behind a screen at 2 am."
“Definitely,” Jason agreed. “And since I’m certainly not going to be the one on the computer, I will leave that to you. I’ll take care of the being active stuff.” Because he supposed that was probably more of what it was for him. Working out in and of itself wasn’t necessarily the most enjoyable option out there, but when it came to being active in a prison setting – even one as nice as this – it was simply the option mostly easily accessible. Still, now he was curious. “So what exactly is there to do on the computers at 2am? I’m sure our journals and all aren’t that interesting.”
"There's lots of stuff to do on a computer at any point in time that doesn't necessarily have to do with internet or journals. The journals are all right, but lately I've been playing a game I got the Administration to put in the shop for me to buy. It's called Plants Vs. Zombies. Fun, indie game, you're defending your house from waves of zombies by planting these home-defense plants. There's a giant squash that literally, well…squashes zombies when they get too close. It's cool." Well, that and a lot of other stuff she wasn't going to go into detail on, especially not the first time she met Jason. "You ever play any video games?"
If it wasn’t for the fact that Mazie had no reason to not to tell the truth, Jason would have thought she was making things up. “That’s… That’s an actual game? That sounds… How does that work? I mean, plants killing zombies.” It sounded… interesting, but weird. But at least playing a video game made more sense than spending all that time reading the journals. “Not much now. Or, I mean, not much even before I got arrested. I did have an Xbox, but I didn’t use it much.” There were a few games that he had enjoyed, but unlike some people he knew, he had never been able to sit around for hours playing. He’d have much rather been out doing something. Because she had mentioned zombies though, he felt the urge to add, “I liked Resident Evil. Played several of those.”
Mazie smiled a little more. “It’s cartoony. WIlling suspension of disbelief thing, just kinda got to believe that the plants can kill the zombies.” She said, shrugging a little. “Resident Evil is great, really great. Loved those games. You know we’ve got some consoles here, right? We could play a game or two sometime, if you’re down. You had an XBox so...Halo?”
Jason supposed he understood that. After all, most games required at least some level of suspension of disbelief. “Resident Evil was probably my favorite, but Halo was okay, I guess. Didn’t play it much though. Same with Call of Duty.” He thought for a moment, trying to remember any other games he had played. He had never gotten really into any of them, so it took a moment. “I played… Assassin’s Creed.” At least, he was pretty sure that was the name of it. “That was better than Halo.” The news about the consoles here was news to him though. Of course, he hadn’t been looking, so it really wasn’t a surprise he hadn’t noticed them. They wouldn’t be on the top of his list of ways to entertain himself or anything, but it was nice to know it was an option. “No, I didn’t know about that. But yeah, I’d be willing to play a game or two, depending on what they have.”
"All great games, for sure. Assassin's Creed was amazing." Mazie said, smiling a little as they circled back towards where they'd started at. "Well, hit me up if you ever want someone to play a game or two with. I'm always up for that," She promised. Slowing down, she looked back his way. "We're supposed to check the tunnels too, right?"
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Jason promised. “And I’ll probably take you up on that sometime. I don’t know how good I’ll be though. It’s been a while.” When she asked about the tunnels, he glanced over in their direction before he shrugged. “I guess. Might as well, right?” He didn’t actually know if they were supposed to patrol the tunnels, but he figured it needed to be done. And if both groups patrolling assumed the other was going to be keeping an eye on it, it wouldn’t get done. Besides, it wasn’t like there was much going on here at the moment. Might as well make sure the tunnels were clear too.
This sort of screamed ‘bad horror flick’ to her but Mazie had promised she’d do her patrol correctly and that was what she was going to do. Why half-ass this? Starting toward them, she looked back at Jason. “You also watch horror films? Because I want to go down on the record by saying this would be the start of a pretty-good bad horror movie...”
Jason laughed at that. “Do you mean the tunnels or this place in general?” he asked with a grin. Because yeah, he had seen enough horror movies to know what she was talking about. “Well, don’t worry. We’re not splitting up, so we’re already screwing with the way these things work.” He wasn’t too worried about it; he was relatively sure that the two of them could handle whatever might be in the tunnels. Still… “But on the off chance anything happens, I will be more than willing to let you say I told you so.”
She smiled a little more at that. “Yeah, it’s never a good idea to split up, not in this place at least.” So maybe she thought parts of this place were conducive to being in a horror flick, but not all of it. Either way, she wasn’t going into this tunnels without Jason. “So...you wanna play twenty questions or something? Pass the time? We could start with 5 questions, just to get the ball rolling or something.”
Grinning as they headed over to the tunnels, Jason briefly considered Mazie’s question. “Sure, we can. Might be fun. But just know, I am really bad at this game. So you’re probably going to win.” He might be competitive, but he also knew that these sorts of games were not exactly his forte, so he didn’t have any problem admitting that he was likely to lose this game. Still, it would give them something to do, and games like that were almost always entertaining.
“Then I guess I’ll go first.” She said, taking a moment to think up her item of choice. When she had it, she turned and smiled at him. “Ok, feel free to start the barrage of questions whenever you want.”
Jason briefly considered how best to start, but finally decided that some of the most basic questions were the best. “Is it alive?
Mazie grinned. ''Not technically but it's not technically dead or inanimate either,'' she offered. "Got another one in you?"
That was… not what Jason had expected. He had been thinking that would be an easy yes or no answer. He considered his next question. “Is it bigger than me?”
Mazie thought on that then shook her head. “Probably around your size. That’s subjective though, depends on what kind.”
About his size and, even though it hadn’t been part of his question, there were multiple kinds of whatever it was. Jason made a mental note of that. “Does it move?”
“Yup, it moves. In a crazy, stocky way. Actually, they use it to describe a certain way or really weird movements.” Mazie smiled, walking a little further down the tunnel. “Next question?”
“Well, now I’m really curious.” Jason considered his next question as he followed Mazie through the tunnel. “Can it be killed?” Since she had said it was not technically alive or dead, he figured that was a fair question.
“Yes. In a very gruesome way, it can be killed.” Mazie grinned again before looking back in front of her. The tunnels seemed clear for now but she remembered they had to check them every so often, so maybe at a different point there would be something to see. “Wanna head back up again and patrol outside some more?”
“Sure. At least it’s a nice night, huh?” Jason said, as they turned to head back outside. As he considered her answers, he grinned slightly. He thought he might have an idea, but didn’t want to guess in case he was wrong. But in the end, he decided to do it anyway. If he wasn’t right then… Well, then he had no clue what she was talking about. “Is it a zombie?”
Mazie snapped her fingers, laughing a little. “Not very original of me, but yeah, it’s a zombie.” It was hard to get zombies out of her mind once she’d started thinking of them, anyway. “Good guess! You wanna go this time or just take a break and enjoy the evening?”
“Ha! Although, I suppose I should have figured it out from your answer to Is it alive?. Well, that and the fact that we had been talking about zombies earlier. Although I guess it could have been vampires or something else like that. I’m pretty sure most of the answers would have been the same.” Jason was pleased with himself. He tended to overthink these games and, as a result, normally didn’t do so well. But a zombie was remarkable enough that he guessed that one would have been hard to miss. “We can play again,” he said. “As long as you want to, I mean. It’s not like we have a lot else to entertain us, right?”
Mazie laughed again, hands tucking into her pockets. “Could have been any number of undead creatures.” Smiling as she looked back over at him, she nodded. “Well, take your time and we’ll start when you’re ready.” He was right, they did have only each other to entertain themselves with and still a long while to be on patrol. Might as well play again.
