Prep work
Characters: Wu and OPEN
Setting: The kitchen, late morning
Mindful of the time so as not to overlap with Carmel, Wu had drawn out his morning routine, letting himself linger in a scaldingly hot shower, take a fresh shave, neatly wok the knot of his tie, and finally settle in with the message from their overseers. It was election day, which was so absurd that he privately smiled at the words on the screen until he reached the tally of who was counted as a resident here.
Haruko Pang. He knew that name very well, knew how uncommon it was to pair a Japanese name with a Chinese surname. He had told her once, decades ago, that the people who taunted her were jealous of the way she combined the best of both nations. Was it her though? The same one? It seemed too unlikely to be coincidence, and that... that definitely drew out the rest of Wu's solitary time with quiet contemplation.
Eventually, though, he knew he would need to prepare the lunch he had promised to Charlie, Grace, and Wren. Forcing past his bewilderment, musing on it with an unreadable expression, Wu headed down to the kitchen. There was coffee left over, a cup to nurse as he set aside the flower petals for tea and began to pull vegetables from the fridge. It would be simple work to prepare a large, communal dish, and when it was done? The warmth of the day would be welcome indeed.
Rolling his sleeves and flipping his tie over one shoulder, Wu was quick to pluck a knife from the block and give it a deft twirl in his grip before setting to work. Relative peace saw his expression ease faintly, and after a moment as he sliced vegetables? He even began the barest sounds of humming, an old melody from his boyhood in Hong Kong.
