Dumbledore never defeated Grindelwald in 1945. Instead, he sat idly by as Grindelwald seized control over the countries surrounding England. Soon, Grindelwald's influence crept into England, causing a split within the nation that would lead to the emergence of two groups: the Knights of Walpurgis, who supported Grindelwald's aims (no relation to a certain Tom Riddle who hasn't been heard from for decades), and the Order of the Phoenix, headed by Dumbledore himself.
