Once upon a time, the Boy Who Lived...didn't. Call it fate, or chance, or luck, but Severus Snape saved Lily Potter, and for want of one big sacrifice, a war was lost.

Almost.

No one knows what happened in that room fifteen years ago. Everyone who was in it is dead, and the only other two who were nearby only saw a flash of light. No Dark Lord ascending to the throne. No victory march. Only dead loved ones, and a palpable sense of dread. That feeling never went away, but life went on.

People healed. Mostly.

Children grew up. Mostly.

It didn't matter if everyone continued to look over their shoulders, the war was over. Win or lose, there was peace. Uneasy peace, but peace none-the-less.

Until the day, fifteen years after the death of Harry Potter, Voldemort returned.

And just as suddenly, the war was rejoined.
