Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
i just have a quick question and wasn't sure where else to put it since i usually come here for everything. i have two journals that i still want to keep, but want to rename one of them with the other. so if the main username is username1 and i also have username2, and i want to rename username1 with username2 but still keep username1, would there be a way to do that? if i took a third journal and renamed that one with username1, would i then be able to go into the ex_username1 account and rename it to the username2?

sorry if this is confusing but it's the best way i could figure out how to describe it!

I did this a while back on dreamwidth and it took me 2 rename codes and three journals to accomplish, like how you described in the last question you asked. Also you would have to make sure that you don't have username 1 redirect to username 2 as it has to be available to be renamed to.

Details: I had OLDNAME as my main journal but I wanted my new main journal to be NEWNAME. I didn't want OLDNAME redirecting to NEWNAME but I wanted all my communities and friends from ODLNAME to be moved to NEWNAME. I renamed OLDNAME to NEWNAME, and checked to option to transfer friends and communities, but did not check to option to have the un itself redirect. I then created a brand new journal and renamed it OLDNAME. So now I have both OLDNAME and NEWNAME in my possession. NEWNAME is my main journal with all my posts, friends and communities from OLDNAME.

I hope that made sense.

thank you so much!

so if i renamed my current journal to the new one i want and unchecked the redirect option, the current journal name would still be available and not moved to ex_current or whatever? that's why i assumed i would have to rename a third journal with the current one, and then do the current one with the new one i want so i can keep both names. i just didn't know if when it inevitably moved current to ex_current if i would be able to access it. sorry for so many questions i just don't want to mess up and lose anything since my current journal is a paid account and all.

As far as I am aware, the current name would still be moved to ex_current, but you could use a second rename token to grab current back. if you had checked the redirect option it would be moved to ex_current but "current" would redirect to the new one and would not be available to use as a rename because it would technically still be "in use"

Unless there's another way around it I don't know, you will still need two rename tokens to accomplish it. You will still need that third journal. but if you didn't unselect the redirect no amount of renames/journal would let you rename to 'current' because IJ would consider it taken if it's redirecting to the new name.

If it's ex_current and not redirecting, you can still sort of access it; you will just have to use another rename token to turn a third journal into 'current'.

Wow this is confusing! No wonder you had so many questions.
