wikis
does anyone have experience using free wiki hosting services? for rp, school, personal, whatever. what do you use and why do you like it?

wikkii.com has my favourite clean, bare-bones, closely-imitating-wikipedia.org interface, but it is insanely unreliable and i can barely access it 90% of the time. it's pretty much unuseable now which sucks because it was my preferred choice for rp purposes.
wikia.com is fugly but more than that, it's really sluggish.
i used wikidot.com for like half a second a year ago and it looks promising but i'm nervous to commit to a service without knowing how reliable it is. there's also wiki-site.com but again, i'm not sure how reliable it is?

our mod's been trying to install a wiki in her personal domain but for some mysterious reason it won't install right. which is super weird because it worked fine before. in our last game, having a wiki enabled us to get a ton of world-building done super fast with lots of input from the players, which was great because it felt like everybody's game, not just the mods'. i'm dying to have that again but i'm gunshy about committing to a service that might crap out on us unexpectedly like wikkii.com did, ahahaha.

I've been using wikidot for my character wiki ever since The Great Death of GreatestJournal, and I love it. It's an easy interface, there are some things you can't really do very well, but you can usually figure out a general workaround to get something similar to what you want.

http://kitten-patronus.wikidot.com/ is mine, I've done a variety of different kinds of page layouts with it, if you want to check it out. What I really like about wikidot is the page lock: although I'm the only one who edits it, if I have it open to edit a page, it won't let anyone else edit it for, like, 1000 seconds (about 16-17 minutes). Which is nice, since I'm usually working on it on both computers, and that way I don't have one page up and am editing it on one computer, and then try to edit it on another computer and risk losing what I was doing on the first computer.

is it pretty reliable? not a lot of downtime?

I've never experienced any downtime. I don't know if that's just because it's super-reliable, or if I've just happened to never have been checking on it / updating things during a downtime.

This site says it was last down over a week ago, so it sounds pretty reliable. More so than IJ, anyway. ;-)
