Can anyone point me to tutorials on making custom journals for IJ?
I'm just curious to see if it's something I can do but I can't seem to find info on it anywhere and I hesitate to get a paid account in case it turns out I can't.

When you say 'custom journals', do you mean custom entries for things like private line plotting, or do you mean custom layouts (like Flexible Squares/Smooth Sailing from LJ)?

I mean like the flexible squares and shit. I just want to find a guide/way I can fiddle around with the codes. I already know HTML and CSS but I don't know what classes are involved with IJ.

I haven't had occasion to figure out Flexible Squares or other LJ-only layouts, but this is a list of all the elements in the Bloggish pagebuild. The elements are layout-style specific, so if you make a layout for Bloggish it won't work with, say, Generator.

What browser do you use?

Thank you so much - thats exactly what I am looking for!

I use Firefox and it's,web developer add-ons. I only use the inspect element tool, though....

Sweet! I'm glad I could help. Again though, each journal style uses different elements. (For example, I completely hand-coded a layout for Smooth Sailing and put it in Bloggish just to see what went wrong and it totally broke it ;.;) But that's a great start for designing your own layouts in Bloggish, and without a paid account too.

Right on! I actually use a pre-beta build called Aurora. (It gets finnicky sometimes but by and large I have not had problems with it and it's totally compatible with the Web Developer Toolbar, LJ-Login, and a few other things that are awesome, like ColorZilla.) The inspect element tool can help you map out other more specific elements if you have trouble figuring out what they are.

Yeah. I hang out at gaiaonline and make profiles (layouts for Gaia's version of journals) for commissions. I really enjoy coding and designing them but a lot of times certain codes won't work so I use the inspector tool to make sure there aren't any overlapping sections. Once I get the hang of bloggish I might get a paid account and miss around with other styles.

I heard there's a way to make changes in the code live with webd but I dunno. I feel like you could really mess up the website....
