i've probably over looked it somewhere but is there a code that can be added to your layout coding so that it automatically friends locks entries? or is that in the asylum's settings somewhere?

Auto locking your journal is a setting that you can turn on by using the Admin Console. There's an explanation of how to do it in the FAQs here!
