Image Host Concerns
Am I losing my mind here, or do Tinypic and Photobucket completely destroy the quality of .jpg images over time? I just don't recall as many artifacts or as low of quality with my older images as I'm seeing now. Not that I can check the source, though. Most of the originals were deleted after uploading because they're just profile photos for characters.

If these hosts do, in fact, re-compress or otherwise lessen quality of .jpg files, I'd love to know of any alternative image hosts with reasonable bandwidth and no minimum viewing requirement. (I'm using Imgur for some things, but you're limited to number of images visible within your account and images not accessed often enough in a certain period of time 'may be' deleted.)

This is true. I've noticed that over time some of my higher DPI or generally bigger sized pictures get incredibly blurry. I've had to reupload them, and it was a pain =/

I haven't had it affect me for a couple of years now, it may have been a one-off server glitch or something. That doesn't make it any less of a problem, because albums are used to store the only copies of a picture. If that gets corrupted, you have no backups to replace it.

It is for this reason that I try to burn at least one copy of the file to disk...since I had a recent slave drive crash that took out years of stuff stored on it.

Jeez. I'd never thought to ask this question before, but it makes sense as to why my older icons stored there look like overly pixelated crap. I thought I'd just progressed that much in my icon making, but apparently not.

Honestly, the only reason I thought about it is because I've been saving .jpg files with no less than 96% quality over compression for at least three years now. So when images that aren't but eight months to a year old start looking like I saved them with MS Paint or something, I have to wonder what's going on.

I mean, I don't know for certain that the host is to blame, as I haven't found any originals floating around on my drive yet to use for comparison. But it seems that way, and it sounds like I'm not the only one who has experienced this before.

Oh, and off-topic, I kind of seriously love your username and drop box .gif.

Try using imgur.com! I haven't had any issues with them decompressing the file sizes!
