hello, everyone! So, I'm not exactly new to the community but this is my first time posting and while browsing through all the extremely helpful links but I still haven't really found a basic icon making tutorial. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just your simple tutorial on how to properly icon photos so they don't look blurred or grainy, etc. For example these. (my apologies if that's your journal but I totally dig how simple and clean the icons look!) can anyone help me out? Also, what programs do you as icon makers prefer to work with? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Well, for starters, you'll need a more robust image editor than paint. There are ~ways of obtaining Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, but if you want to stay legal, you'll need to use GIMP or one of the online Photoshop clones like Sumo Paint or Pixlr. They look scary and there is definitely a learning curve, but once you get used the process, you'll be able to do it in your sleep.

Ack! Hit submit too soon.

I'd recommend starting out with the online editors and then trying GIMP because GIMP can be tough to learn if you don't already have some image editor experience.
