Make your game's Contact List more accessible

  1. Make e-mail addresses and screen names linkable so players can send e-mails and add others to their buddy list in just one click. Include journal names in the list of the player's characters to save the forgetful players the trouble of comparing the Contact List to the Character List in order to find all three pieces of information (i.e. Player, Character, Journal).

    Example
    Jane (Mary Sue, Gary Stu)
    Timezone: CST
    Screen Name: janeroleplays
    E-Mail: janeroleplays@gmail.com
    CDJ: [info]jane
→ Jane (Mary Sue [[info]marysue], Gary Stu [[info]garystu])
    Timezone: CST
    Screen Name: janeroleplays
    E-Mail: janeroleplays@gmail.com
    CDJ: [info]jane
    Code

  2. Provide links for mass e-mail, a buddy list builder, and a CDJ friend adder. These tools are especially helpful for mods and new players.
    Example: Mass E-Mail Link

send an e-mail to all players

    Code

    Example: AIM Buddy List Builder

add all players to your buddy list

    Code

Notes: Replace spaces in screen names with a '+' sign. This tool will not work with certain AIM and MSN platforms.

    AIM Hyperlink Command Codes
    MSN Hyperlink Command Codes
    Example: CDJ Friend Adder

    add CDJs of all players
    Code

Notes: The adder needs to be accessible by each player's CDJ in one of a few different ways, depending on the level of privacy of your game and players.
    1. A public entry in the moderator journal.
    2. A f-locked entry in the game's OOC community if you allow CDJs there.
    3. A public entry in the OOC community if you don't.
    4. An entry in a moderator's CDJ.

This is actually really handy (especially the mass e-mail link!). I imagine a lot of people will have issues setting their browsers to work with it, though.

I use Gmail and Firefox so it's the only one I can personally say "OH THIS WORKS!" for.

For Firefox, there's some great information for setting up mailto links to work with gmail on your firefox browser here.

All I personally had to do was go to the following as I have the gmail notifier on firefox:

Tools > Application > mailto > there's a drop-down list. Select 'Use Gmail' > Okay.

For IE, I stumbled across a great tutorial here that explains how to set-up your default mail program with hotmail, yahoo, etc. There's also a guide to how to set-up a gmail notifier that allows you to set firefox as your default mail client.

Oh, thanks for that. I use Firefox, Thunderbird, and Pidgin. So, I've never had any of these not work and didn't realize they could present so many problems in other software.

I don't think it's a problem (aside from Trillian) so much as y'know. Setting it up. Still, the regular info's there so users can use that if they have issues. Either way IT WAS AN AWESOME POST. <3

This is fantastic! Will definitely be implementing this in the next game I help run.

Thanks! Good luck with it. As [info]chaperoned just pointed out, there are some problems than can crop up depending on your internet settings.

Haven't had any trouble so far, but I'll keep that in mind. :)

I have been able to get the AIM add all to work on adding the first name on the list, but not the second.

This is the code I have;

a href="aim:addBuddy?groupName=Darkest+Of+Times&listofscreennames=Fieldz0fJoy,Combat+to+Boot">Add all players to your buddy list.</a I've checked it against the code you have here and it looks like it should be working. Any ideas?
