I know I have asked this before a while ago, but I cannot remember the answer for the life of me. Can someone point me in the direction of a good (free) screencapping program?

You mean a batch screencapper? I don't know any good free ones, but I could look around.

I'm not sure what you mean by "batch", but just a program that would allow me to capture screen frame-by-frame for icons?

Batch means it'll do a whole video for you in one go. You don't need to do each frame by hand. If you want to do it by hand, you should be able to do it with most players like VLC and Media Player Classic.

I agree with the person above, I use GOMplayer and it's pretty sweet.

The KMPlayer is what I use to for screencaps. If you have an LJ, there's a tutorial here (you have to be a member of ~dj_capslock to view it, though) on how to use it, but basically you right click in the program, choose "advanced capture" from the capture modes, and tweak the settings with the frequency with which you want it to capture images. You can also specify the folder they go into, and a prefix for the images (so it'll be xxxx-00001, xxxx-00002, etc).

I'm not sure if it's the version that I downloaded, but when I tried following the directions that's on that LJ page, it doesn't show a "Capture" option in the main menu. Is there, like, a back door to get to that option?

Yeah. I realized that, too and had to figure it out. I left a comment with instructions, but it looks like you figured it out already!

I use KMPlayer for DVDs, but I also use Fraps for Hi-Res youtube/iTunes/Netflix videos if that helps. It's free, and doesn't watermark caps.

GOM, VLC, Irfanview. I like Irfanview the best for capping, you can tweak your settings, let the file run and it will cap at whatever interval you've set it for.
