CDJs 101: The Whys, Whats, and Hows.

What are CDJs?

Okay, this might seem like a stupid question, but until very recently - we're talking within the last couple of weeks - I had no idea what a CDJ was. So, for all the newbies - which I have a feeling consists mostly of old-school RPers like myself - the answer to this question is simple, but vital.

A CDJ is a character development journal. This is a journal in which a player can list their current characters and games they play in, as well as any previous RPing experience they may have. Also, a CDJ is where one can post writing samples, applications they're working on, and just any ideas they have regarding their characters in general.

Why do I need a CDJ?

Strictly speaking, no one really needs a CDJ. However it's very nice to have when you're developing a character for a game or trying get into their headspace. It's also a handy place to have when you're working on applications, and can act as a central hub for all your RPing history as well as a place to link to writing samples and the like.

Also, as [info]splott pointed out, CDJs are handy for friending icon journals and joining icon communities that require membership to see posts. And as [info]chaperoned mentioned, CDJs help give game mods an idea of what kind of player you are and how you've played various characters before. All in all, very useful.

Well, I've made my CDJ. Now what?

Now, it's the usual. Customize your journal how you want, if you want. As pointed out above, content usually consists of rping/character-related things such as RPing history, character directories, applications, etc.

What about my CDJ user info? What goes there?

In all honestly, you can put anything you want in your CDJ user info, but it probably makes the most sense to have it be RP-related. There are a lot of options when it comes to customizing the user info. Some people like to use a custom table/layout to put their character directory there, kind of to let people know right off the bat who they play and where. An example of that can be found here. Yes, I know it's not in the actual user info, but you get the idea. I will update with a proper example as soon as I find one. If anyone would like to volunteer an example, awesome.

Another option is to use a profile layout. With a profile layout, you can write a little about yourself, what you like and dislike as a player, and what you're looking for in a game and/or storyline partner. Profile layouts also allow linking to specific posts you want people to see. Here's an example.

Where can I find layouts/profile layouts for my CDJ?

As many are aware, some layouts can't be customized on InsaneJournal without having a paid account. For those of use who can't afford to pay, a few S2 layouts that can be tweaked with custom CSS are Bloggish, Dear Diary, and A Sturdy Gesture. There may be more, but those are the few that are certain. You can find a list of places to find layouts here at [info]rp_tutorials. A lot of layout designers also make profile layouts now as well, so be sure to check their tags. There are also some available in [info]rp_tutorials's own layout directory.

That's really all there is to it. If anyone is confused or has any questions about things I didn't touch on, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer it.

Aha. I had seen the term "CDJ" but, not being up on my RP terminology, I had no idea what it meant. Now it all makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

This is a really brilliant resource! I remember going "WTH IS A CDJ" just a couple months ago so totally know where you're coming from.

As a moderator, CDJs come majorly in handy for me. It's nice to be be able to look over their earlier games and see what kind of player they'll be and how people have played a character before.

...you. Wow. Your icon is totally melting my brainmeats. *STARESTARESTARE*

AHEM. I'm okay, I swear!

Anyway, I'm pleased as punch [yeah, I said it!] that this post is somehow remotely useful. And I hadn't even thought about the modly aspect of the CDJs. Maybe I should add a little something in there...

I know right. I just picked an icon at random and HULLO THREESOME.

I know, bb. I KNOW. My icons do that to me quite often.

It's extremely useful! You have no idea how many people ask me wtf a CDJ is. And I'm like "UMMMMM. Well. I think it's like...?" And on top of that, the post is generating a lot of discussion about what people use CDJs for -- which is awesome.

<3!

SALDK;LJSDFJKJH how is this icon somehow hotter than the first?? You're killing me here!

...don't stop.

But for reals, I'm way pleased that I can help out in my own little way. Also, the discussion is ace! I'm learning things! :D

Oh, that is very cool to know a moderator's perspective. I read this post last night and thought "hmm, that sounds pretty cool, is it worth the effort?" but now that you have said they are useful for moderators, I think I will definitely make one. I had one back on GJ, but this post is giving me ideas to make it better!

I know a lot of moderators do. On a personal note, I just like to get a better feel for players as applications aren't always the best indications of what they're like as a player. So, yeah, I definitely think they're helpful. <3 Good luck with your CDJ!

I totally agree with Fin, this is awesome!

For me, I have two "CDJs", mostly because I'm kind of shy with my Apps, so I have my apps and writing and a bunch of memes (another thing cdjs are good for) at ~alter_writes but this is more of a personal journal, with a fandom/rp twist? Not sure how to explain it. I do a lot of memes and reading of other people's stuff with this journal.

Another reason to have a CDJ is for friending icon journals!

There's also a slight difference between a CDJ and an Example or PSL journal, but I think it's pretty much the same thing, only I don't comment on anyone with my PSL journal unless I'm working out a line. Either of my CDJ is a "friendlier" name that I feel okay with being known by (referring to the phenomenon of calling people by their journal names rather than their given names) rather than my PSL or example journal.

Hee! Thanks!

I can see the appeal of having more than one CDJ, especially if they're geared towards different things. And I should add the part about friending icon journals! That hadn't occurred to me.

I'd never heard of referring to people by their journal names instead of their actual names, but given how anonymous RPing has become, I guess that makes sense.

Sometimes I just want to see what my friends are saying, not just icons all the time, so having a separate journal or using your examples/development journal for that is great.

Well, I think it's dependent upon how close you are with people. Also, there are some people that have the same names and are in the same games so that sometimes gets a little confusing. I'm not against people using my name, but I like my journal name too, and sometimes people might recognize a player faster by their journal or aim sn than by their first name.

I can see that. I mean, I don't really have a friending/personal journal over here - all my friends are on LJ/Inksome - but I guess you could say I use my CDJ to keep on top of things. I also have a journal here for venting/lurking.

And I have to admit, I'm guilty of the latter. I don't do it intentionally, but you're right. I sometimes recognize people more by their journal/AIM names. But I do try my best to learn their actual names [if they share them] just because, to me, it makes them seem more like a real person rather than just an RPing entity. If that makes any sense.

[info]splott

Oh yes, that is the other journal use, venting/lurking. But yeah, the CDJ phenomenon is kind of interesting. I first started mine as just a writing journal, back on GJ, but the whole meme/character lists/histories/development fad took on. Curious! I like seeing what people do with their journals too.

Yah, same here. I'd rather know people's names if I'm really playing with them, but sometimes it's a friend-of-a-friend thing? Like I was in a game with A, B, and C, but they're in a game with D, E, and F, and F makes icons, so maybe I don't know their names or haven't been given "permission" to know their names? Not that you must have permission to know peoples' first names, but it's kind of a respectful thing, to be introduced to someone *babbles on*

If I had even any idea what I was doing, I think it would be interesting to write up a little something on the evolution of CDJs. But I'm far too lazy and have no clue what I'm talking about. xD

Oh yeah. The peripheral friend thing. In that case, yeah, it would be kind of awkward to presume personal names unless it was okay on both sides.
