Further to the previous question, what is the best way to handle the situation when a hold has lapsed and you have another person wanting to apply for the character? It's not a case of choosing between two apps - Player A has placed a hold and then fallen off the face of the earth, as far as I can tell. Not responding to IJ pings, not on AIM, etc - and Player B wants to app the character.

Do I tell Player B to app anyhow, and risk having to turn them down when/if Player A comes through?

Do I tell Player A tough luck and accept Player B's on principle?

Or do I wait until I have both apps, making Player B wait for Player A, and then decide based on merit? Of the three options I feel like this is the least fair.

If Player A let their hold lapse, then they don't have any claim on the character any more, and if Player B's app is good enough, then you don't have any reason not to accept them.

I agree with [info]helloworld. Plus, why would you want to accept Player A anyhow if they've seemingly dropped off the face of the planet? To me that's a warning sign of how they'll be in the comm. Non-existent when you could have someone playing that character and being around frequently.

i agree with what's been said. if player A let their hold lapse without asking for an extension or otherwise explaining their situation to you, there's no reason not to accept an app from player B.

Just to tack on to this, player A might be having computer issues. But if their hold has expired... well, there hold has expired. It sucks but it's totally fair to go ahead and accept player B, especially on the off chance that Player A is just flaky (and probably will continue to be in the game).

ALSO, you can do that out of courtesy in case it was an issue like what I mentioned above (computer died). But seriously, B's interested, they're around, it's unfortunate for A, sure, but not your problem and rather unfair to do to Player B.

The hold has expired, so technically all rights go to player B, however ... Player A could been having computer troubles/RL issues, so what about offering player A the opportunity to get the first pick when Player B flakes/drops out of the game?

I had someone quit and pull four characters because their hold lapsed on the fifth and someone else with a great application submitted as soon as it expired. Three days later they flipped out and quit. And everyone in the community was sad to see their characters go but thought they made a fool of themselves pitching a fit.

If they can't get the app in before the hold expires and they can't contact you to at least ask for an extension, what makes you think they'll be reliable tagging in a timely manner? Maybe they had computer issues, but such is life. "Computer issues" are also a famous scapegoat for slow RPers. It's just bad luck if it really is a PC problem.

If the hold is lapsed they have no claim. If the player flips out, then you don't want that kind of drama. So long as your hold policies are clearly stated, fair is fair.
