Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Is your game slowing down?
Are people seeming to only thread with a few other characters?
Do you have inactive characters and their players can't think of something to do?

The answer is here!

OTA 2010 was run at [info]irreparable in August and it was largely successful. It's a week (or two week if you like) long event where players choose from open prompts to post threads for their characters. The catch is that they cannot be tagged from someone they have frequently/recently threaded with.

I set it up with a fun graphic to make it exciting,

and then I introduced it with the following text:

The Event: Starting now players will have a chance to claim an OTA from prompts that will be listed below. A character will claim a prompt and then within the next hour throw it up in the IC Community with Character: X and OTA.

Another character who is NOT a brother, significant other, room mate, best pal, etc (someone they normally don't thread with, please!) will tag and a random scene will start.

At the end of 2 weeks we'll look back at the OTA2010 threads and I'll hand out some awards (for creativity and openness to new interaction, etc.) I'm hoping this will spark some plots. We need more OTA to get things mixed up.

Behind the cut is a code for the OTA2010 posts. Please copy and paste it and fill out the blanks before starting your post.

Now comes the time for OTA prompts. The key to making this work is to make sure the prompts follow 2 specific guidelines.

1. The set up requires no previous character interaction
2. The set up leaves it open for a variety of characters to slide into X and Y slots.

You also don't want people to plan ahead ("I'm claiming number four, who wants in?). They should just post it and see who tags. Also, in case you were wondering, the "within an hour" stipulation is optional, but I used it because it stopped people from claiming great OTAs and then never getting around to posting them up. Here are the prompts I used:

Character X is mugged. Character Y stumbles upon them and saves the day.

Character X accidentally dyes their hair green and runs into character Y while trying to buy supplies to fix it.

Character X gets lost and character Y helps them find their way home

Character X falls into a puddle on a rainy afternoon and character Y helps them dry off.

Character X isn't watching where s/he is walking in a shop and crashes right into character Y.

Character X hasn't had a thing to eat and blacks out. Character Y brings them to the hospital.

Character X is getting a new pet and runs into character Y, who helps them pick it out.

Character X is being pursued by someone annoyingly persistent at a bar/club and decides to pretend Character Y is their significant other. Character Y plays along.

Character X and character Y both try to buy the last copy of the same book.

Character X gets into a barfight over a Quidditch rivalry and Character Y jumps in to stop them from being outnumbered.

Character X has a charm backfire that gives everyone in the area blue hair, including character Y.

Character X has too many items to bring home from the shop, so Character Y helps them carry it all

Character X drops something of value and Character Y chases them down to return it.

Character X and Y are stuck in a long line at the ministry together.

Character X and character Y find a lost child in Diagon Alley and together locate his mother.

Character X and Character Y, both too tipsy to apparate home, end up on the Knight Bus together.

Character X signs up for a new class and finds that character Y is a new classmate.

Character X and Character Y get trapped in the ministry lift together.

On a busy, hot afternoon, Character X and Character Y have to share a table at Florean Fortescue's

Late at night Character X and Character Y run into each other at the coffee machine at St. Mungo's

A floo connection problem accidentally puts Character X in Character Y's home.

Character X trips and spills a drink on Character Y at the Leaky Cauldron.

Character X has a date scheduled with a guy/girl he/she met in a bar. When they show up, it turns out the date has been double-booked with Character Y.

Character X and Y have an awkward encounter when they run into each other in an Adult store.

Character X is walking down a street and ends up being chased by a pack of dogs. They catch up to Character Y and both end up being chased together.

After a night of drinking Characters X and Y wake up together, neither having any memory of how they go there.

Characters X and Y are both in a shop while it is being held up.

Good luck and let me know, if you try it in your games, how it turns out!

This is brilliant and I love it! I wished I had this at various slow points in past games. I might make use of it in the future though. ♥

This is awesome, I'm going to keep this in mind. :) Though, I feel a little stupid for asking: what does OTA stand for?

Ironically, I was just looking at this and thinking 'We're going to need this in November.'

At first I was like "wait, what's going on in November?"

and then I remembered that grad school has clouded my memory of the fact that NaNo is in November. xD

Though last year, I saw people doing a NaNo-esque challenge where they counted their RP efforts towards 50,000 words.

NanoWrimo is RP death! Yeah, I think someone I knew did Rpwrimo last year. Didn't help her to stop being a flake, though.

Ooh. I might just use this in a game I mod, we're all getting a bit stuck in grooves of which character plays with which.
