Re: Carson M/Jake R
[This was a truth readily apparent to Jake, even if he hadn't much considered it before. A smile rose with some reluctance to the surface of so much trepidation; it dug into his cheek.]
You just gotta keep walking, figure if it's behind you or in front and where the place you want to be is, behind or front. [His aunt was smart when it came to places and to women, Jake assumed. Carson probably needed to be somewhere good about babies, and he knew she needed to be somewhere where the street grime wasn't going to reach out and snatch for her. Carson's cheer was the kind where money was a nice, soft blanket to wrap it up in, and money made New York a far better adventure than without it.]
I'm going to work. Planning on hostels until I can find some place real permanent, they're real cheap and it won't be long. [He said this with confidence: he'd slept outside before, when it was colder and crueler than spring. A hostel was better than that.] You want a tour, you just gotta write me some.
