[Jake didn't doubt Carson's smarts. Schooling didn't much matter when it came to choosing the way you went, and Carson had her own mind, clear as paint. He'd been to Sunday school long enough and listened to prayers taken along with meals enough to believe in a God whose rules were writ down in books. Enough for guilt to sit sickly close enough on his chest with every breath he took. Not enough to fault her for doing what felt good, if she much felt like it.
