Re: Queens: Evie/Wren/Luke
[Luke was momentarily preoccupied with Lia, rocking her and murmuring soothing things to ease her cries. He trusted Wren to lock the door, and he had nothing to offer Evie in terms of what she could do-- he really didn't know. His mind was blank. He turned to see Daisy approach the fort, bold as always, but he knew Gus was different; Gus wasn't bold. He was quiet where the little girls were loud, and he was easily overwhelmed. Daisy meant well, he knew, but when Wren whispered he looked at her and nodded; he understood. Lia quickly got over her tears and clapped her hands when she saw Evie's little girl, babbling around the pacifier in her mouth, and Luke had an idea. He set Lia down carefully near the pillow fort, and dropped to his knees, peering inside where Gus was curled up in a corner with his knees to his chest.
What he whispered to the little boy was too quiet to be audible, but it had the desired effect. Gus crawled out of the fort, slow, slow, and wrapped his arms around his father's neck, head buried against his shoulder. He stood, lifting the little boy easily, and led Daisy over to Lia; let them play together. They were both loud, both babbling and happy. Gus could hang out with him for a while, because he didn't mind quiet.
He carried him into the kitchen, where the table was set. It was a good in-between place; he could keep an eye on Lia and Daisy in the living room, but he could keep an eye on Wren, too. He knew she was easily startled, because he noticed everything when it came to her. But he was quiet. He watched, and he met Wren's gaze when she looked at him. Then he looked at Evie, curious.] You sell hats?
