[There were things she wanted to say, but she knew that she wouldn't be able to do that and breathe at the same time, so she kept her words to herself. The spike in her heartrate at the sight of the alien didn't help her to steady herself any, but she was able to shelter the baby as well as she could from the sound of the gunshot.
And then she was standing on her own, no more support from a helpful arm, and she braced her legs as she turned to look at Mai with a frown. Something about the aliens reminded her of (somehow faded) memories of other attacks, invasions, people that took whatever they could. Something sparked in her mind, and before Mai could move too far, she reached out a shaky arm and wrapped a hand around the other woman's forearm. She shook her head once, sharply, and pull as much as she could as she continued to move toward the nurses.]
