There had been the handful of friends, Sam the ever-present amongst them and then there had been Ford, a brother he hadn't known and hadn't wanted and felt deep-seated dirty guilt for leaving behind. Now there was Nathan, and the clean, inevitable, desperate kind of love that came with parenthood, no matter what way it was shaped. He had loved Ellie like that and he had lost her, and he'd been real fucking set on losing nothing ever again. Now he had a bunch of things he cared too much about to lose, and Ellie came back in.
