"There are no monsters back there," Thomas said with confidence, now sure that Luke and he were talking about different things. The dead could be monsters, just as people could be monsters; it depended on the person. Thomas, too, could make a person into a monster, but so could death, tragedy and circumstance.
Rather than moving in mirror to Luke's relaxation, Thomas stayed still. He had never moved much, always stillness, because stillness meant control. Readiness.
"All of them. Which... which woman do you mean." But Thomas thought he knew. His knee ached.
