He gave her a faintly chastising look. "They have no reason to trust me. I am not in any of the fairy tales they read in other doors. I do not have a uniform, and my activities are not what the captain would call 'honorable.'" No smile. "And I am willing to use deadly force to protect or avenge the innocent. It is not a nice thing. I am a natural enemy, not an ally."
Thomas took in a deep breath, and stood once more. "A secret for a secret. The larger yours, the larger mine. We'll meet here, when you have time. You can go whenever you'd like to. But here the secrets remain, including the ones I have told you. And you will come back, if you have something to tell."
The gray eyes seemed more immediate, though shuttered with his guilty expression. "I know you have no reason to believe me, but I am trying to save lives, if I can."
