Marvel: Wine Tasting
Who: Sebastian & Evie (and Wren & Luke if they decide to come)
What: A blind date at a wine tasting?
Where: Sebastian's wine shop
When: Thursday evening
Warnings/Rating: TBD

It seemed that putting the wine-tasting shortly before the holidays had been a good idea, given the number of people that had responded and the turn out thus far. Sebastian hadn't been sure, given that he was still new to the area, but chances were paying off and the little shop was flourishing. He was doing his job as host, though he had several others there to assist with the tasting, people who knew and loved wine more than he could ever imagine feeling. Truly, it was those that he worked with that really made the shop work.

Sharp in navy and checks, Sebastian did the rounds of the shop, checking in with this person and that person, all the while keeping an eye on the door. He wasn't sure what Evie looked like or if she would arrive with Wren and Luke, and the anticipation of whatever was to come was making him itch inside. Something needed to happen before he went out of his mind.

Evie was late. After having spent most of the day taking her temperature to see if she had anything even close to a fever (and taking Daisy's too despite not even the appearance of a sniffle from either of them), she was starting to panic that she was going to wind up going to the wine tasting. Of course she knew she would , but not being in a state throughout the day was helped along by the random idea that she would find a way out of it.

Of course, as she was getting out of the shower an hour before she was supposed to be there Wren called to find out when she'd be bringing Daisy by, and Evie knew she had to hurry. She tried to find something to wear, jeans, sweaters, dresses, even that ridiculous outfit from the Halloween party that barely fit the way it had that night, she tried on. Even while she did all of this, and that, and combed her hair, and put on stupid eyeliner, she was rehearsing excuses not to go out loud.

It was nothing personal, not for Evie, she would have just rather spent time with Wren. Or at home. And not with a stranger in a strange place doing a thing like a date when she knew, knew, that this was just a last ditch effort from Wren to find someone who liked Evie like that. But Evie was settled on that part of her life being over, firmly believing she got one chance and once chance only. She'd already met her soulmate and the idea that she'd have more than one out there somewhere was absurd and unfair to the rest of the world.

She was lonely, but accepting. And the mama cat, and her four day old kittens in the garage on a heated blanket was just the starting point. It amused her, but others apparently didn't find the humor in it and she hated that someone might feel sorry for her. So she'd promised. She'd promised. She's promised. She'd promised. She'd promised to do this, but not only that she'd promised she could do this. And Wren was being a good friend and Evie was constantly crapping all over that, and it didn't feel good to be that kind of person.

So she got dressed quickly, dropped Daisy off even more quickly, and settled in for the long, multiple train, subway ride to the address Wren had given her.

By the time she arrived on the street she was almost fifteen minutes late, feeling guilty and terrible, and having no idea who she was supposed to meet. The name sounded familiar, but even if they had met at some point in Seattle she didn't remember what he looked like. And she was much older, a little fatter, brunette pixie cut instead of waist length blonde locks....No. She was definitely screwed. So she stood outside, across the street from the wine shop watching people walk in and out. She was trying to see what they were wearing (a lot of red and green and sparkles in their hair. None of which she had, but she didn't feel too under dressed. So that was a plus.). She also wanted to see who was going in and out alone (no one).

Almost thirty minutes late. Shit.

She walked, almost jogged, across the street the next time the light changed. She didn't want to let Wren down, that was her family, her best friend, and she had promised she could do this. She could definitely do this.

[part 2 - this is a problem for me today]

As she moved closer to the door she kept reminding herself it wasn't a real date, because he hadn't asked. And neither had she. And if he dated Wren, even for 12 seconds, he was no doubt still absolutely madly in love with her (who wouldn't be?), and that meant she had nothing to worry about as far as "dates" went.

And that was just how Evie functioned these days. It made even her roll her eyes at herself. And it was overly analytical. And ridiculous. And she knew it.

But whatever got her through the door before she froze to death outside was fine by her.

She looked around, hands balled into fists in the pocket of her black wool coat. The shop was nice, the music was nice, there were people everywhere and she still had no idea who she was looking for, but she didn't know if that meant she was supposed to look lost, or look exactly like she knew what she was doing.

So she stopped right inside the door and did nothing but look around a little. That was clearly the best choice. At least until the door opened behind her almost immediately and the two people walking into the shop almost ran right into her (as one would expect standing right in front of a door).

She apologized and moved off to the side and busied herself looking at the lines and rows of bottles, and accessories, and glasses along the wall. Everything but two buck chuck was out of her price range these days and she had learned the hard way that did not agree with her at all. But occasionally the Professor sent something nice along.

She would send him here next time he asked for suggestions, if only because she was already feeling guilty for whatever stupid thing she was going to say throughout the course of the night. And of course she was late. And of course she wasn't even technically actually on her date yet. And at least looking at things had her looking busy. And out of the way of the door. Blind dates were officially terrifying. And weird. But the subtle nuances in wine names and pretty labels. She rather liked those so she kept looking, while trying to look slyly around the room in case she saw someone who looked just as lost as she did.

Ever the welcoming host, Sebastian busied himself between making small talk with those that had decided to come and welcoming those that had walked through the door, making sure that they knew where to hang their coats, where to start, etc, etc. So when the door chimed twice, close together, a wave of relief washed through him. The tasting was already well into its first hour and he was filled with concern that Wren's friend had decided not to come. Then what would he say to Wren when she checked in, likely the next morning? So every chime over the door was hope and he excused himself from the couple that he was speaking with, gracious smiles all around, and he moved towards the door.

One lone woman and a couple that he was already familiar with. They waved and found their own way in, leaving Sebastian and the woman to themselves for the moment. His smile was easy and warm, a hand extended towards her. "You're looking a bit lost. Is there something I can help you find or perhaps someone you're looking to meet?"

Evie was looking at the different bottles far too intently and trying to think of clever things to say. She was thinking so hard about it that by the time she tried to look surprised by someone approaching her, she had completely forgotten who she was, why she was there, and what kinds of important things to say so Wren would stop worrying about her.

Instead she looked at the person standing next to her like he had a bear calvary behind him. And why was he extending his hand toward her? She was sure there was some social nicety in there that she knew very well but was missing. "I'm not lost," it was a good strong start. Something she needed help finding. Or someone she was looking to meet. She wasn't sure if that was accurate, but she somehow doubted that the guy talking to her was looking for her exact situation. So, rather than explain her entire life story she decided she would just inform him who she was looking for and be done with it. "My friend set me up on a blind date with her ex-boyfriend because my fiancee died over a year ago and she thinks I'm going to die alone and miserable." Good.Strong.Start.

Sebastian let his hand hang in the air for several awkward moments before he lowered it, sliding it into his pocket instead, as casual of a stance as he could muster right then. He wasn't sure if this was her, or not, and as he listened to the explanation that she rattled off, Sebastian came to several conclusions.

First, this was most likely Evie. Could it be anyone else given the very specific things she had mentioned?

And second, this was a lot more complicated than Wren had ever let on.

He closed his eyes for a moment and thought of Nell, Nell who was someplace else, not even in this world most likely, and most decidedly a far cry from the woman who stood in front of him. When he opened his eyes once more, that smile was still in place, easy going and sincere. "I'm going to throw out a wild guess here, but are you Evie?"

Evie's eyebrows raised slightly when he closed his eyes for a moment, of course this was Sebastian. Of course Wren had set up a date with a guy who was at work. She laughed. She actually laughed.

"Yes. I'm Evie. And if Wren asks what I said first tell her it was super charming. Please."

The laugh had him grinning, his smile warming up a bit more, if that were possible. "I will say nothing but positives about our first words together," Sebastian said with a grin. "I'm quite sure she'll have a lot of questions for the two of us when all's said and done, after all."

He gestured to the room behind them with one hand. "Do you enjoy wine? Or did she convince you to come in to some place where you don't even enjoy what they serve?"

"Many questions. I will avoid answering them at all costs, I'm a terrible liar. So I'm going to be looking to you to do all the lying for me," she said shaking her head a bit.

She smiled, "Do I enjoy wine? I probably over enjoy wine. That whole dead boyfriend and single mom thing kind of comes with an over enjoyment of wine. Its in the contract." It was a light comment, serious subject matter, but a light comment just the same.

"You may be a terrible liar, but Wren has the uncanny ability to read me like an open book. I'm no better in regard to her." But he grinned nonetheless, co-conspirators in the game of Wren.

Sebastian led the way further into the shop, away from the groups that had gathered and towards the bar instead. "White or red? Sweet or dry?" he asked as he pulled out two glasses and began looking at the bottles in preparation for her answer. "And Wren didn't say that you were a mother. How old is your kid?" He had nothing against the state of her life, dead boyfriend and kid lumped together. Everyone had their own baggage they carried around, himself included, so who was he to start throwing judgement around?

"Oh there is that to consider," Evie had the same problem with Wren. Even if she wasn't in the same damn Door as her. "We're so screwed."

She followed him, looking around at the shop, and laughed at the options he gave her. She had opinions, but it had been a while since someone had asked her. "Wow. I usually go for whatever is three dollars or less. But red. And sweet. Almost Port sweet, but not quite." Hey, if he was going to ask...

She sighed at the lack of mention regarding Daisy, she didn't think it was a deliberate oversight, or meant menacingly, but she knew Wren didn't think much about the things Evie worried about. "Of course she didn't," she said smiling a bit, rubbing her forehead a bit nervously and tucking her hands safely back in the pockets of her coat. "Daisy will be two in May."

"Three dollars or less? Then you're definitely in for a treat." Sebastian gave her a grin as ducked away momentarily, returning less than a minute later with something that fit her taste. Uncorking it took only a moment and then two glasses were poured, one pushed over towards her and the other kept for himself. Elbows were leaned against the counter as she talked about her daughter. It really didn't surprise him that Wren hadn't said anything; perhaps she knew it was a little tidbit that wouldn't bother him.

"I've heard two year olds can be quite the handful. I haven't had personal experience, but I applaud anyone who has children. I'm sure it's..." He trailed off with a sip, sweet just as she had requested. "An adventure." Not one he would mind, he didn't think, but it just wasn't in the books for him. Not yet.

"I've gotten some decent tastes from 3 dollars or less!" she said with a teasing grin. When he returned with the wine and poured her a glass she thanked him and took a drink. It was very tasty, and she nodded in approval. "Very nice. So, you have a wine shop, do you have any wine that yoiu make on your own?"

She took a larger drink at the mention of two year olds being a handful, but it was moslty a joke. "Handful and adventure are understatements. But she's great. Really great."
