Re: phone: carol/jess
[Another pause before a long sigh.] Then the people who actually want to be a team should be a team. I-- [She stops mid-sentence, and the reason for that becomes obvious when she gives a pleasant "hey, how's it going" to a passing runner. Back to business, voice a little lower.] Look, I don't know what else we can do, Jess. Military, you use your downtime to unwind, and the camaraderie comes naturally. Here, we invite people to come over if they want to, and we're forcing things? [She shakes her head.] That, to me, comes across as an unwillingness to get to know each other.
[Maybe she's off base. Maybe her read is wrong. But, Carol is stubborn, and she doesn't easily admit when she's wrong.] At this point, I'm not sure what else we can do, except go at it on our own. And I-- [Another pause. Carol laughs and gives a short greeting to another passerby.] Honestly, Jess, for my own sake, I'm just leaving it alone. [Beat.] No offense. [Because it feels a little selfish to say "hey, I need to not think about everyone else while I'm working on my own sobriety," but it was also how she felt.] It's just that this is not a new problem, and it's not the first time I've spoken with anyone about it.
