Sometimes it's possible to will your mind to know when you're dreaming and tell yourself it's not real. But that's rare. One thing people do sometimes is have imaginary rehearsal. You think about the dreams you have and how you would change them, make an alternate ending that's less scary. When you lie down, try to picture a good memory, or a place that you feel safe. Only let yourself fixate on those good images. It's possible your unconscious mind will be caught in those instead of in the bad place you're in.
