Quicklog: Doctor/Rose
[It could have been ten seconds later or ten months later, time was wibbly that way, but the Doctor knew what he did was try and get there as quickly as possible. The TARDIS knew how important it was to him, so while they might've taken a long way around, he still felt the expedience. It was funny how long time felt when he was in a hurry for once. They finally made it to Earth, Earth 2014 it said, London, and he was on his way out the door. Except then he stopped and had the ridiculous urge to find a nice pinstripe. Listen, it'd been a long time since he actually cared about what type of tie he was wearing, but it was happening. Foolish, yes, but he was an old fool that way. Or maybe he was nervous it wouldn't work. This could all have been a trick.

In London, the TARDIS arriving made a great deal of noise. Strange to anyone who'd never heard it, but someone who knew the sound of the engines wheezing, it was a sign. The Doctor stepped out of the deceptive blue police box, thick rimmed glasses on his nose that he didn't need in the least, and both of his hearts were pumping. He left the journal back in the TARDIS so for now he was simply putting his hands in his deep coat pockets, the collar popped up, trying not to look overly anxious. She said she'd be there. If she wasn't there he'd wait probably for a few decades, no problem, and then find out who was having a lark on him.]

[Rose had closed her journal, and she'd tried very, very hard not to get her hopes up. Oh, it wasn't that she doubted the Doctor would try to get to her, but what if he couldn't? What if they were in separate universes, again? So many what ifs, and she knew if she let herself hope too much she might just be disappointed in the end. Problem was, she couldn't help it. For the past few months all she'd been trying to do was find him, bouncing between dimensions, racing against the clock.

This wasn't the parallel Earth, which added to her hope. She'd know if it was, or she was pretty sure she was, and this wasn't it. Not the other London. It was familiar, though, and she ended up walking to their meeting spot. It was close to her old flat, and she half expected to see her mum appear; of course, she didn't. No mum, no Pete, no Mickey. No place to stay, either, and her job with Torchwood was in another universe, but after all she'd faced this was nothing. If the Doctor came, well, it wouldn't matter, would it? And if he didn't... she'd manage, somehow.

Waiting was the hardest, really. She had no idea if he would be minutes, days, hours, since time was tricky and the TARDIS wasn't always reliable. It felt like an eternity, but maybe it wasn't; she couldn't be sure. All he could be sure of was the sound, so very familiar, and she knew. She knew what it was. Her heart was in her throat, and as it faded to silence she made herself turn around, made herself move to investigate.

And there it was. There he was, looking just as she remembered, and her face broke into a grin.] Doctor?

[The Doctor had been alive for a long time. Longer than most people guessed, but shorter maybe than they theorized. Time Lords didn't have the benefit of forgetting, the way a load of memories could mesh together, and a few of the details fell by the way side. After centuries, people thought it would get easier, or time would seem to pass quicker, but it never did. So every day he spent with someone was a lifetime, when he put it down to the minutes, to the seconds. He tried not to do that, because it hurt. He did it once Rose was gone. Every second, stretched out. Rose Tyler. She brought him from the brink of insanity, and he told her he would never leave her behind, not like the others.

She was never like the others.

So leaving her on that beach, he tried to let it be. She got the life she wanted, wasn't that what everyone wanted for the person they loved? He walked away and he lost Donna and he lost Rose and he lost himself, really. Which would explain why her voice could crackle through his ears and into his body and make him feel brand new. Like he was when he regenerated and he saw her with these eyes for the first time.

The Doctor tried to play it cool.

It lasted ten seconds.

He immediately grinned right back at her, all teeth, and he couldn't think of anything clever to say. Instead the Doctor made the move toward her, hugging, he loved the hugging, and swept her into his arms. He wanted to laugh and cry and possibly live there in that second for the next decade, if that was possible. Rose Tyler. On his Earth.] Rose. [He'd been about to die, and now he was with her, so maybe he did, and that was fine. That was just fine.] Looks like we're in trouble again.

[It was one thing to hope for something, another thing entirely to actually get it. Rose remembered a beach, she remembered a goodbye cut short, and she remembered the slow, painful process of moving on. Torchwood. A new job. A new life. But in the end, even that had led her back to the Doctor. She was supposed to be warning him, but she'd forgotten all about that. Wasn't even on her mind.

Her grin widened, and her face hurt, but she didn't care. It turned into a laugh when he moved towards her before she could take a step, sweeping her into a hug that she returned just as tightly. Like if she didn't hold on, he might disappear again.] Hello. [She couldn't stop smiling, and really, she didn't want to.] Course we are. I don't mind, do you?

No, no, not at all. [He was fine with any and all trouble at this point. Whoever was in charge of what was happening here, and he knew someone was, he'd get to them later. The Doctor couldn't just ignore what they were doing, it was against the laws of time and space, but he could let it slide for a little while. Until he found a way to solve that problem and to keep her at the same time, he never wanted to have to sacrifice one for the other again.]

[He pulled back to look at her face, but he kept his arms at her waist, because letting her go was not an option at the moment. It was physically impossible.] I'm glad I didn't have to burn up another sun to have a conversation, that was a bit rude. [She was beautiful and perfect in her imperfections and the Doctor was going to start doing rash things if she kept smiling at him like that. He was supposed to focus, yeah, focus on the time discrepancy. But she was Rose Tyler and he found himself saying things he wouldn't say to anyone else.] I was about to die. [He didn't realize how afraid he was of it, until he was safe.] Regenerate, I was about to regenerate.

[Maybe she should've been a little more concerned about how, about details and repercussions and the laws of space and time, but just then all Rose really cared about was that this was happening. How, why, those things didn't matter. Not now.] Good. [It came out muffled against his shoulder, and she was reluctant to pull away. It felt like this might end sooner, somehow, if she moved even just a little.

But, slowly, she let him pull back, which did make it easier to look up at him. And no, she wasn't letting go just yet either.] Rude, but worth it. [She grinned.] Still not as good as this, though. [Her smile faded when he told her he'd been about to die, and she realized just how close she'd come to never seeing him again. Oh, he'd have still been the Doctor, but not this one. It was hard enough the first time; she wasn't sure she could have done it again.] You were going to regenerate? What happened? [Her brow furrowed in concern, and her fingers tightened ever so slightly on his shoulders. Pause, pause, and she tried for reassuring.] You're not, though. You're fine. You're here, and you're fine.

To say goodbye to you? Yes, yes it was. And besides, it wasn't being used anyway. It was on loaner. [He grinned back until it started to hurt, but it didn't matter because they were in their own little world now. It always felt that way too. The Doctor and Rose, like there was an orbit that only included the two of them. Their time together was so short; for a man who had nothing but time, it was brutally short. He thought about going back in time to see her before their adventures, it wasn't smart, but it was something. He figured it was too dangerous. He'd want to take her back. He'd ruin the timeline, he'd be tempted.]

I'm here and I'm fine. [He repeated, and he had her stabilizing him physically. But it whirled in his head, and his two hearts were pounding. He remembered it, and Wilf, and it wasn't going to be an easy death. It would be long.] Saving a friend while he was coming to save me. I did that for you too, yeah? [The Doctor smiled although it was strained. He saved her, and turned into himself, and he wasn't sure what was going to happen in the next one. He only knew he wasn't ready to leave this life.] I left you again. I'm sorry. I had to. We saw each other, and [He was saying things he usually didn't say. The Doctor was always good at holding back his thoughts, but he was too frantic at the moment to keep it together.]

There was another me. Half human, made from my hand. He stayed with you.

No harm done then. [She beamed up at him, entirely oblivious to everything else. They'd always been that way, caught up in their own world, and when other people didn't get it they'd just share a look and laugh. For so long all Rose had of those times were memories, and she'd had to be okay with that. But then there was hope and it had led to this, somehow, and a tiny part of her feared that it might be snatched away without warning.

But seconds ticked by, minutes, and he was still here. So was she; that was something. It was so him to be the one who saved, instead of letting himself he saved, and she shook her head.] Course you did. You wouldn't be you if you did anything else. [Her brow furrowed when he said he'd left her, because wasn't that familiar, but she wasn't expecting what came next.]

Another you? [Her voice came out sounding small, and she cleared her throat.] Why couldn't I stay with you? The real you?

[The Doctor lived a long time, and that meant he thought too much. Far too much. He didn't give in to his impulses and emotions, not nearly as much as it seemed. He put on a good face and bounced from place to place, that was true, but underneath the grins and quick talk, there was a cool, calculating eye. It was only his companions that managed to make him feel anything, and he'd been without one for too long before Rose. He was quite the fixer-upper before she got her hands on him, and she didn't even know.

Guilt was very familiar to him, and that's what he felt when he looked at Rose. Joy too, joy most of all, but guilt, there was too much wrapped up in that day to explain properly. Losing Donna right after. Losing the two people who made this him who he was. He swallowed and looked away from her, trying to find the words. He pulled back, although he kept a hold on her hand, since he really didn't want distance right now.]

I couldn't be what you. No, that's not right. You deserved, no. [He made a face, his mind moving fast, coming up with at least two dozen responses that didn't even make it past his lips.] He committed genocide, he was like me when we first met. Angry. And you saved me, so I thought. [The Doctor sighed and then met her eyes again.] You could have a full life with him, he was human, he could grow old with you. Give you everything you wanted or needed. In a way I couldn't.

[It was hard, but she let him pull back. If he needed space then she wouldn't crowd him, since she'd already figured out that there was a lot she'd missed, between her point in time and his. But she didn't add any distance either, and she didn't let go of his hand.

Rose watched. She waited. He tried to explain, starts and stops, and despite the seriousness of the conversation she had to fight back a smile. He was still so, so familiar, even after years apart. But what he said, about this other, human him, it made sense; at least, she could understand how it made sense to him. But she couldn't imagine herself agreeing, even so.]

Did I want to stay? [It was an honest question.] I understand why you thought I should, but did I want to? Did I choose him?

You kissed him. He could give you what you wanted, and he said what you wanted to hear, and you kissed him. And I left. [To him, that was enough of a choice. The Doctor set it up that way, he let her make the decision, and he did not blame her for it. But it did hurt, as irrational as that was. He couldn't take her with him, certainly not his other self either, so that was the only option. Logic had no place in the situation. He turned and walked away the second their lips touched, because he didn't want to see it.

He shrugged his shoulders, to shake it off, and squeezed her hand.] I still can't grow old with you, but I can take you on adventures, and I can be your Doctor again, if you like. [It was just like when he first turned, that uncertainty if she could accept this version of him. There was no half-human version of him now to give her everything, but he could do something. And not let her go this time.] It's been many years for me, but that hasn't changed. [He was still hers.]

[She couldn't help thinking how much it must have hurt him, to watch her kiss the other Doctor, the human one, the one she chose. Logic only went so far when emotions were involved.] Oh. [There really wasn't very much she could say, was there? That was her future, apparently, but Rose hadn't gotten that far yet. She didn't want to think of it as being inevitable. He was here, now, and so was she, and that alone changed things. This hotel changed everything.

Caught up in trying to think of what to say, she looked up when he squeezed his hand, distracted, but as she began to realize what he was saying she couldn't help the hope that rose in her chest. She'd spent so long trying to find him, hopping from dimension to dimension, so long fighting, that she hadn't really allowed herself to think of what came after. Even finding him seemed too much to believe in.

But now she had a choice. She grinned up at him.] I'd love that. [She squeezed his hand and tugged.] I've missed it. Traveling with you.
