[Steve smiled with upright innocence as Sharon closed her eyes. He dropped his gaze and his expression blinkered into confusion as Gwen smiled something small and secretive, and the red in his cheeks deepened. The man stood, very still, hands locked in his pockets, as Sharon talked about the car and things in it and as Gwen's grin grew syllable by syllable.
Then she laughed. Steve smiled instinctively, warm—and while he generally always was that (in circumstances that allowed for it), warm—there was a certain lack of tension under Sharon's roof, like a stiff collar had been removed from an uncomfortable shirt, that lent him back some of the youth consumed by war. But, either way, he hadn't been expecting anything like what Gwen had just said to come out of her mouth, even as her cheeks dimpled.
