[On the other side of the glass, Steve stood. He frowned. He watched as the young woman cried, the complete collapse of her heart all but audible from where it crumbled in her chest, as he told her exactly that which she didn't want to hear. The moment her world sank away in a maw of black, she shrieked, she fought back, and it was painful to watch.
But his pain had nothing to do with it. As hers overwhelmed her, coalesced in whatever way it would, and consumed her, for a moment, he ceased to exist. Everything was whittled down to Becky L, to Crane, and the love they had for one another. Steve didn't doubt that it was true, at least on her end. He could see the rawness of it on her face.
Steve didn't flinch and he didn't speak. She rose, face red, tears angry. He could see (barely) that she was shaking where she stood.] We're turning you over to the authorities in the morning, ma'am.
