[Tense intent coiled in his shoulders as he twisted toward the crawling, sniveling thing on the ground. His head was pounding incessantly, and the trees around them shrieked in his mind like metal on metal as they swung at the soldiers like gnats. The whole city seemed to yawn and shake itself, loosing a hundred souls a second. Even the air smelled like choking smoke and death.
None of that mattered. Not the chaos, not the Captain he didn't even see. What would happen when he had gained his revenge could not be predicted, but it would set things to rights.
He saw the Captain as he came up beside him this time, and he did not wait to be struck. Now he was infuriated, beyond words, beyond a sideways cut about the appropriateness of this, that the man he saw in the captain's place would fight so hard to keep even a single good deed from him. There was only what he must have, and the objects in the way of his frenzied determination. He fell forward to avoid the brunt of the blow to his back and kicked his legs sharply out, twisting to strike the captain in his midsection, to knock the breath from him and get him clear of his wriggling trophy.]
