TWD: Clem/Beau/Tess (maybe Caleb and Joey)
[This wasn't the hospital. She was real sure of that.

The house was some old place, and she could see dust lining every damn surface of the kitchen she was in. Old stove, and her back was flat up against it. She was still wearing a hospital gown, but she'd been moving around before this happened. Her hair was still dripping light brown from the dye Graham had brought, and everyone said she took after her sister when she didn't go to the trouble of making it blonde. She'd been dyeing it since Lorelei died, since that very day, and she looked down at the dripping strands before she forced herself to standing.]

Anyone here? [Her voice echoed through the empty house, and she had no clue what was waiting outside in the sunlight. She brushed some wayward blood off her forehead, and she climbed the stairs slow; she needed something to wear, and then she'd suss things out.]

[How did that movie go? Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore? Except there wasn't a Toto, and he couldn't certain of where he was, except that the room was old and dusty, the blankets on the bed caked with dirt and dust, his old backpack on the ground beside the bed, full with what he hoped were things he could use. Sitting up, he looked around, pushing sandy brown hair out of his face, swinging his legs around to put booted feet on the floor. That's when he heard the voice.]

Bedroom! [The door was closed, but he got up to open it, peering out the bedroom into the hall and whomever's footsteps were creeking on the stairs.]

[She wasn't actually expecting anyone to call out, and she stopped for a spell, hand on the railing. She listened some, and she convinced herself that voice didn't sound a thing like a Murphy. It was all south and nothing like England. And she'd always been too damn impulsive for her own health. Her momma had always encouraged that in her, and it made her take the rest of the steps, though weakness made her slow some.

She looked around when she reached the landing, and this place definitely didn't have any living folks in it. The dust was thick, and things were all knocked over. She grabbed a lamp, and she knocked the lampshade off and used the thing as a makeshift bat, the cord trailing behind her as she rounded the corner toward the cracked-open bedroom door real quick.]

Put your hands where I can see them.

[Beau had learned at some point in his life that when someone said to put your hands up, it was best to listen and do as they said. Even if you hadn't done a thing wrong, it had a way of making you seem less threatening, less likely to do harm, and given the current situation, Beau didn't want to seem threatening in the slightest. So he lifted his hands up and toed the door open, revealing himself but making no move into the hallway.]

Not armed. Not gonna do you a lick of harm. Promise. [He licked his lips and tried for an easy smile, but it faded after just a heartbeat because he knew that woman. No, she wasn't blonde like she had been when he had last seen her, but he'd know that face anywhere.] Clementine? Is that you?

[She had a decent amount of self-defense training, and that just came from working in a firehouse. The menfolk there were always training for something, and it had come in plenty helpful with patients who were hurting and not the nicest they could be. Normally, she would have taken that slip of a boy and rammed him in the belly, just to keep him down. But she wasn't doing real well, and she leaned against the wall heavily instead.

And then she recognized him, after brushing some more blood off her forehead.] Beau? Is Jake here? [Because her nephew was just about the only thing she had left in the world of Lorelei, and worrying after him had been part of things since she'd been just a teenager.]

Where are we? [She took herself a step forward, and then she heard something from downstairs, and that lamp was back up as she turned to look at the steps.]

[Tess heard voices, but that didn't do much the quell the tension that was brewing in her. This wasn't her place. Wasn't Shane's. Wasn't anyone's she knew, and she tiptoed around it carefully as she tried to make some kind of sense of what was going on. She doubted she'd come out on top though. This was the hotel's doing, after all.

She followed the sounds of people up the stairs, her hand coming up to rest on the side of her bag, pressing it to her hip while her free hand adjusted the strap slung diagonally across her body. She felt for the familiar weight of the handgun there, a precaution she had taken to keeping with her fro the past few weeks, as the situation with her family and the Murphys kept escalating. She didn't recognize the two voices, though, and kept her hand close to the flap until the very last second she needed it.]

Hello? [Her voice wasn't loud but it still echoed against the ruinous walls of the house. Her foot creaked on a stair and she slid it back, shoe scuffling on the wood.]

He may or may not be here. You're the first person I've seen since I woke up. And I've no clue where we are. I was hoping you'd know the answer to that. [There wasn't any further room for talk when the creak from downstairs sounded, and Beau thought it safe enough to lower his arms. A pop back into his room had him grabbing a heavy vase off a dresser, something in defense, and then he was coming up along side Clem, not as wary as her but not quite relaxed either.]

Best be puttin' your hands up where we can see them. [It's called out as an echo to Clem a few moments before, sweet Southern twang sounding foreign with the words.]

[Clem wasn't good at waiting, and her concern for Jake was shelved a second as she counted steps to the stairs. She decided she could make it just fine, and all without crumbling and dying, so she took all them steps while Beau went hunting for that vase. Beau, who she remembered as a little thing alongside Jake. She wondered if Graham knew anything about them coming out, and then she remembered this wasn't Vegas.

She stopped at the top of the step, and she looked down at the blonde woman at the bottom. Recognition immediately suffused her features, and she lowered that lamp, which was too damn heavy by half.] You're Tess. I seen you on the news. I'm Clementine, and I hate Alexander Murphy just as much as you do, so there's no need to go reaching for anything in your pockets. [She motioned over her shoulder.] This here's Beau. He's normally real gentlemanly.

[It was cute how he told her to put her hands up. Like she was going to do every little thing a stranger in a strange house said. Instead she glared up incredulously, the look only lasting a beat before it shifted to the woman. She looked vaguely familiar, the recognition only flashing across her face when she said who she was. The scowl only faded halfway.]

I'm sure he is. [Not that she believed Clementine. No that she cared to know Beau when he was being more gentlemanly than he was now. There was only one thing that mattered.] You two know where we are?

[Clem wasn't actually surprised to see some of that frown lingering, even with her disclaimer.] You can ask Shane to vouch for me, if you need. [If she even knew where Shane was.] Assuming you can find him, because I haven't heard a lick from Graham since I woke up here. [She assumed maybe Tess knew Graham, but maybe not, just like she hadn't known a thing about Shane until real recent.] Either way, Alex tried to kill me real good a week back, so I'm no threat to you and yours.

[As for knowing where they were, Clem shrugged some, her body still blocking Beau's, in case the blonde woman decided she'd had enough of both of them.] And Beau isn't kin to the Murphys. [Just in case.] I got no clue where we are, but this place isn't lived in. And you smell that? It's faint, but that's dying. [Because she knew all about that in her line of work.]

You look out the windows? [She asked Beau over her shoulder, since she thought he'd been here longest.]

[Graham? That got Beau's attention for a moment, but he was wise enough to keep quiet as Clem went on about people and things that he didn't have a clue about. The vase was put down when it seemed that there wasn't an immediate threat to either his or Clementine's safety.]

Haven't had a chance to look around much. Woke up shortly before I saw you. Your guess is as good as mine, Clementine.

Yeah, yeah. [She had heard about the attacks of Clem, but Tess rarely gave anything that didn't immediately concern her family more than passing attention. She did concede a slight nod a the mention of her brother, and a slow flicker of recognition with Graham's name.] Faint dead things. [Right. Well. She turned her attention briefly down the way she came.] Bring those lamps with you. Just in case. [Her hand slid back to her purse, feeling for the familiar weight and shape of her gun.]

[Clem wasn't expecting a warm greeting, but she wasn't real sure Tess was any better than Alexander just yet, not after Shane and how quick he was to go shooting at folks. But there was no point in saying a thing about that, not when they were stuck together for the time being.] I need to get clothes. I'm not going outside in a hospital robe and no shoes.

[She turned her attention to Beau.] You go on. I'll be right there.

[And with that, she turned and disappeared (real slow) into the room Beau had vacated. She assumed there was nothing dangerous in there, or he would have said as much. And sure enough, she found herself a closet that still had things hanging on hangers. It looked like some things had been yanked haphazard, but she found herself a pair of jeans that fit decent, and a tank and button down. She folded the sleeves up as she spied a bathroom with water that still felt like trickling, a few seconds later, blood gone, she was back on the landing and following them down the stairs, toward that growing scent. As for the lamp, she'd gone and replaced with a broken chair leg - sharper, and she didn't have to drag a cord behind her like some tail.]

Well? What we got? [She leaned against the wall nearest the window, and she breathed jagged.]

[He could hear voices, mufled through the wall but the dark made it seem like a strong sound. Joey could see light coming from under a door, and a cord dangled low, brushing the side of his neck in an unnerving kind of way that made him pull at it. The string was old, and it didn't take any strength at all to snap the cord into a frayed mess. No light came on, however, but he could see a line of light beneath the wooden door before him that made it easy to figure out where the handle was. The door opened to an old kitchen, and with the arrival of fresh sunlight, Joey could see behind him where he'd been standing in a pantry. An old farmhouse pantry with shelves and shelves of canned things in mason jars. The voices were more compelling, though, and they drew Joey toward the front of the house where the others were. He hesitated for a moment in the dining room's doorway, but the sight of his sister pushed him forward immediately.]

Tess. [The darker haired woman was glanced over and dismissed before he narrowed his eyes on the boy. Joey didn't recognize him, but that didn't mean anything. Then, back to his sister.] You good? [Aside from the obvious issue of coming to in a house he didn't recognize, the place just didn't feel right. Or smell right.]

[While Clem and Tess exchanged a few words, Beau ducked back into the bedroom he had woke in, grabbing the small pack that he never went anywhere without. Wasn't much in it, and he couldn't even remember what he had put in it last, but he wasn't leaving it behind. A nod was given to Clementine as she told him to go on, and he started down the stairs, pack and heavy vase in hand, floorboards creaking beneath his feet, and the scent of something - yeah, maybe dead things, even if he didn't want to think about that - wafting through the open windows.]

Hard to tell. Real quiet outside except for that smell. [And that was when the other man came within sight, and Beau wasn't real big on being paranoid or acting paranoid, but this was a strange place. His hand tightened on the vase just a bit, just in case, and he kept quiet.]

[Clem recognized Joey right off too, because she'd spent plenty of time looking at news on the damn Alexanders. She held her tongue, though, because being friendly clearly wasn't the plan. And she didn't feel friendly much anyway, on account of this man being the one who started problems bad for her. Her face didn't look too bad, but she was nothing but bruises beneath the borrowed clothes, and he was responsible for them, least partways.

She moved to a window, since no one had done a lot of looking outside, it seemed. But nothing out there moved, and she wondered if she was imagining that smell. Or maybe it was old, something buried out back, some old dog or something feral gone getting trapped in the walls.]

I don't see a thing. Nothing's moving out-

[And then something slammed against the door, which was out of sight from the window she was standing at. It hit again, shoulder height, and it seemed real determined. She didn't holler, but she wanted to. Instead, she just went real quiet. A whisper.] Someone armed with anything real? [It seemed a pertinent question, seeing as that door was about two second away from buckling.]

Joey! [Her voice didn't rise much, not in this abandoned house in the middle of... wherever they were, but her face lit up with relief that he was there. That was one family member accounted for at least.] I'm good, as good as I can be. [Her hand didn't move from her bag but the free one gestured to the other two.]

Clem. Beau. Murphy. ...Someone. [Clearly she didn't care about either, but didn't see either as much of a danger. Not in the current state the woman was in. She started to shrug when Clem spoke, and then the noise of door. She started, but now her hand grabbed her gun, her thoughts much the same as the woman's. Her voice tight, now that there was a new, unknown threat.] Joey, you any idea where we are?

[It was only after Tess said the other woman's name that Joey looked back to Clem. It was a considering look that couldn't qualify as anything nearing friendly. Narrowed eyes, knife's edge squint. Grit teeth, feral and potentially mean, Alexander geneties in action. Joey didn't know why he didn't recognize her immediately, as he'd seen images of her on the news during the hell they'd left unfinished in Las Vegas. Maybe it had something to do with the bruises, maybe it was something else. The loud thud coming from the front door kept him from mulling it over. When Tess spoke up, he took a step nearer her with big brother instinct. The fact that she had a gun wasn't at all surprising.]

I don't know. Not Vegas. [The few windows to the outside showed too much green.]

Who's out there?! [He called toward the door, but nobody answered. There was just another heavy thud, and the frame splintered.]

[Clem was starting to get the feeling that it might be just as friendly inside as it was outside, but that didn't mean she was stupid enough to get near that door with all its rattling. The scent of death was getting stronger, and it seemed to be increasing, even before Joey called out and that heavy thud caused the frame to splinter.

The wood split clear down the center, the crack nowhere near as deafening as the moans that were real audible just then. An arm reached through a growing crack, and the thing was missing most of its hand. The skin was mottled grey and white and black in places where it was eaten through to the bone. Clem didn't need to look up to realize what that face peering through the hole was going to look like. That face wall skeleton and dead skin and gaping black at the maw, where skin hung dead and old red from its chin. It snapped its teeth, and Clem backed way into the hallway off the front room as the door gave entirely. Feet started stopping in, more than one set, and she didn't know whether to go up or out the back.]

Where the heck do we go? Upstairs and hole up, or outside? [Screamed, because she'd been to enough haunted houses on Halloween to know what the undead looked like, and she had a real bad feeling about their ammo running out before too many of those things fell.] There might be more outside. Holing up might be best. [Not like she could run real well, and going outside might mean dying right off.]

Jesus fucking chri-- [Her curse was cut short as the thing came through the broken door, reaching for them. Big brothers were a blessing and a curse all rolled into one but at that moment, she was glad Joey was there and wanted him to stay that way, so she grabbed him with her free hand to haul him back with her.]

Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit. [She'd seen some movies. While she cocked her gun and lined her shot, the desire to empty all her bullets in the things face very high, the fear that these weren't the only zombies and that these were her only bullets hadn't escaped her.] Up? [Sure it wasn't the best option, elevated with the one way out being the way they came, but who knew what was out there?] We can check the windows and-- [She started to glance at her brother before another shuffle and moan echoed in her ears.] Fuck it. Up. Go, go, go. [Urged Clem up the stairs, short of pushing her, and hoped Joey was not far from her. Or would haul her back if he had a better option.]

Up. Up. Up. [The first sight of those things coming through the door with their stuttered walk and empty gazes spurred on something very primal within Beau, an immediate fight or flight response. But given their lack of knowledge about the things, fighting didn't seem to be the best thing, so he settled for flight, hauling ass up the stairs along with the others, though he took a moment to make sure Clementine was coming along with him. He didn't care much for the state of the others, not yet, given their status as strangers. But Clem? He knew her, wanted to make sure she was safe.

The bedroom was where he urged the others, the same one he had woken up in, and the moment the four of them were inside, he shoved the door shut, twisting the lock, though he didn't think it would hold.] Help me push things in front of the door. Maybe - maybe we can hold them off for a bit.

[Clementine was coming along just fine. There was nothing like undead folks at the door to get an injured woman hauling ass. When Beau slammed the door shut, she caught her breath against the wall for a second. And the door came shaking in and heaving, and she starting moving and doing exactly what Beau said. She didn't pay a lick of attention to Joey and Tess just then. She shoved at nightstands, and the dresser, at the mattress, at anything that could be big, and there wasn't a bit of stopping until the entire room was up against that rattling door. But the thing seemed to be holding, and Clem leaned on over, hands on her knees, and gulped in air that smelled like rotting.

It took a few seconds of sucking in that air for her to straighten, and she walked to the room's window. It was over a slanted edge of roof that was wide enough to climb onto, if someone was inclined. In the distance, there was trees and maybe something that was a prison or a power plant, but that was far on out, and it didn't matter so much. What did matter was the amount of things walking jagged and zigzag across the lawn and down the street a ways.

She turned to look at the folks in the room with her.] No way we can get out there on our own. [Which likely went without saying. She nodded toward the bathroom.] Might have water in there, but there's definitely no food. We ought to see if anyone's around that can help. Scream on the journals some. There's got to be a place to go. [Right?]

[Joey could remember seeing Night of the Living Dead as a kid. Black and white hadn't kept it from being scary for someone little, and his brother Shane hadn't helped the fear factor at all with the childish suggestions that monsters lived in closets and especially under beds.

But that was then, and seeing something as unexpected as that right now felt distant, otherworldly. He knew the hotlel was fucked, of course, so could he really be that surprised?

The Murphy girl and the unfamiliar boy were busy shoving dressers and things in front of the door, and he took a sturdy step back to let them. Outside, he saw that there were more of them, and Joey took a seat against one bare wall with a reassuring look to Tess before he pulled out his journal at the suggestion of the Murphy girl.]

Yeah, I got it.
