It's hard to do that when you know a version well and they look the same and it's an adjustment. But you make the adjustment. Steve and I were both shocked when we realized we were different version, but end of the day it didn't matter to us. We're still us.
It's a long story. I'd say more or less the summary is that a law passed after a bad incident where a bunch of kids died. The law said that all superhero people had to be registered with the government and trained. Some folk agreed to abide by it, and those folk decided to hunt down, capture, and force the others to do the same. Stark was the head of that side. He and his people did a lot of shady stuff, including putting people in prison without trial into the Negative Zone, where no one could get them. It was an ugly war. Cap was the head of the other side. Eventually Cap gave in to Stark, and he was arrested and put on trial. While there he was assassinated.
