Helena Narrative
Who: Helena and a 'nurse'
What: A very bad meeting and an introduction to the Otherworld
Where: Brookhaven Hospital, Silent Hill
When: Nebulously after the last narrative
Warnings/Rating: Horror, violence, gory stuff.
As part of Helena's training with her father, he used to put her in a room and she had to discover every possible item that could be used as a weapon. A chair, a pen, a paper clip, electrical cords, staplers, how they could be used offensively, defensively, as a distraction if she needed to escape.
The streets of Silent Hill were full of such items. A pipe, a broken two by four with rusting nails poking out of one end, an aluminum bat. In the end, she decided on taking the pipe and the two by four with her. The bat could find a home in her apartment later. The board she left leaning against the fence for Brookhaven Hospital, nails almost touching the sidewalk outside of the building. In she went to the building that had once been white, but had now aged to a dingy gray in dire need of a good bath or a fresh coat of paint, she wasn't sure which.
The half rusted door gave a shrill squeal when she forced it open. Inside was just as rundown as it was outside, leaves on the floor, blown in from broken windows, metal trays overturned, but no people. With the building abandoned, she wasn't surprised, though judging by how old the shit inside looked, she wondered if they'd even have her meds at all.
And that stopped mattering the moment she saw someone sitting at the nurses' station. Not just any someone, she'd know those fucking ears anywhere, but why Selina had chosen to wear a nurses' cap over them was beyond her. "Momma cat?" She asked as she slid to a halt in the middle of the hallway.
Selina-nurse turned towards her voice with a hiss and it --it wasn't Selina. It didn't even have a fucking face just a sewn shut gash in the middle of it's head. It lurched to its feet, sway, sway, stagger, bending at the waist in a bizarre pantomime of looking around a corner. "What the fuck?" She muttered as she took a step back, the pipe in her hands clanking on the dirty floor. It hissed again, jerking towards the noise, then snarling as it shuffle-jerked-twitched in her direction, moving far faster than an eyeless thing had any right to do.
"What the hell? Stop! Stop!" And every word only seemed to anger it more, and then it was too close, she didn't have any other choice, she swung home-run on the plate and the thing raised an arm, not to block but because it had a fucking knife silver glinting in the low light of the hallway. She swung again, feet even on the ground, body twisting to add her weight behind it and the wall following her swing was decorated in crimson, graying flesh and white bone. "Fuck, fuck," but the thing was down and so was she, on her knees beside the fallen body. The words stuck in her throat, the fear that this might not be, that it might be -
She tried prying off the cap, gagging as her fingers slid through blood and gray mush that had once been brains but it didn't budge and there was no way, no way, for her to see who was under that bashed in mass.
She missed the sound of the air raid siren, but there was no missing it the body of the nurse melted into the floor and the rest of the landscape shifted. It wasn't real, the body wasn't real, it wasn't her mom or Selina or any version of the Cat. Dirty linoleum became black, rusted industrial grating. Paint bubbled and peeled off the walls in charred chunks, leaving the world behind in shades of red and black.
Fuck this. Fuck this so much. Helena grabbed her pipe and ran back to the door that now wouldn't budge, wouldn't even move, no matter how she threw herself against it. Locked in. Fuck her life.
With a snarl, she started down the hallway again, pushing at every door she came to. They had to have windows in those rooms, right? She could break out. But the doors were locked. She avoided the nurses' station by hugging the opposite wall, but further down there were six of them, all with those ears, all dressed in tight white uniforms that were more sexy nurse than actual nurse. And every last one of them was holding a giant fucking needle filled with lazarus pit green.
If they got close enough -- if she let them -- she shuddered and her pipe clanked against the grated flooring. All of them jerked in her direction and she quickly picked up her weapon again. Sound then. She went backwards as quietly as she could, barely a sound of her stolen sneakers on the new flooring, and ducked into the first open door she could find. A janitors closet. Fine by her.
Now what the fuck was happening in this place? She ran her fingers down the pipe; it was wet and in the darkness of the closet, she didn't have to see to know that it was blood and brains. It had happened. Back to the door, her legs gave out, and she slid down to the floor, panting, breaths coming far too fast. They weren't Selina; it wasn't her. But they were out there, waiting, like vultures circling over a dying animal, but she wasn't dying anymore.
Her fingers flexed around the pipe as she pushed herself up, deep slow breath in. Remember who you are. There were some things that no one could take from her, not unless she gave someone that power over her. It was time to take it back.
Pipe in one hand, she stood slowly, reaching behind herself to turn the knob on the door. Her life. Her choices.
