She knew he was awake. She'd known the second she'd walked back into their small camp. She knew how he slept, and knew that he was not, just then. But she had no words, not in those first moments. Not with everything so fresh in her mind.
The water skin appeared along the edge of her vision, though she ignored it at first, her eyes still on the embers of the fire. But finally, after more than a few breaths had passed, she reached out without shifting her gaze, and took it from him. But then she just held it in her hands, neglecting to take a drink.
And then, rougher than it was even after screaming through battle, her voice: "I have been..."
