ziegfield: log -- wren/mk
[Gatsby is glitter and glitz and glamour. It is a constant party, a constant high, a constant flow of liquor in her veins. It is getting lost in everything that everyone expects her to be. It is forgetting about a little girl at home, or about the man that reviles her existence in his life. It is about the buzzing in her mind, and the whispers of thoughts every minute of every day. It is booze and drugs and pretty people doing some not so pretty things.

Gatsby is escape.

MK has used this to her advantage as of late. The frivolity of Gatsby makes it all so much easier. All of it. Her fiance who doesn't love her, a niece who loves a coldhearted doctor more than her broken aunt, the loneliness, the thoughts of strangers prodding into her brain. She's gotten a little better at controlling when she wants to, but most days? She doesn't want to. She just wants the sharp taste of whiskey on her tongue and the opium highs that filled her brain.

She finds herself one day dragged to some show that she's too high out of her mind to even comprehend, dressed in gauzy gray that makes her bright red hair and pale skin stand out, scars scattered up and down her arm covered up by make-up. But she sits there, fake plastic smile and dazed gaze at the stage, and she loses herself in the spinning performers and the music. And then, she sees a familiar flash of blonde and her face falters. She squints, and she tries to focus on the thoughts, but she can't suss anything out. The plastic smile melts into a frown, and when the show is over, no one wants to even deal with that expression. They know, the friends she cultivated here know that the redhead has a darkness lingering, and no one has the patience to deal with that. So MK drifts, searching for a way to find Wren after the show is finished.]

[The shock of red is too unique to miss.

Wren prowls the audience before the show, one of many pretty girls who smile and entertain and don't let anyone touch. She's feathers, silver and white and a blonde wig with fat ringlets tucked under. She's going to dye it again; her boss wants her to, and she's under probation since the incident with Luke in the flies. She's going to dye it soon, but she hasn't yet, and she's messy brown after the show, still silver and white, as she goes to look for the woman she caught a glimpse of before the lights shone down on her.

She smiles when she sees her. Maybe she shouldn't, because she knows things are different now. They'd made up in Vegas, bygones and friends again, but MK is power now. Wren knows, and she approaches really, really carefully.

Still, her smile is genuine warmth, and she reaches out to hands covered in silver silk, gloves to her elbows, and she really does love this life.] Hi.

[That easy smile spreads across her face again, and her dull green eyes are just a little gazed from booze and opiates.] Hi. [And she doesn't hesitate wrapping Wren up in her arms. She focuses on the buzzing in her brain to drown out any thoughts the woman might have. She's being considerate! For now, at least.]

[Wren knows the unfocused look. Despite it being prohibition, men and women come in hazy all the time, and she thinks things that aren't alcohol might be easier to get in this time period. Still, the hug is surprising, but she gives it back with a happy laugh that sounds as bright as their surroundings, genuine, and she really, really is happy to see her friend.] Is Delilah happy to be home? I bet she's happy to be home. [She keeps her arms on MK's waist, and she doesn't look around at who the redhead is with. "Not Adam" registers in her mind, but she doesn't really care at all about that.]

[Gatsby is easier to live in than Marvel these days, and she's very glad to have escaped so much noise. There's noise here, to be sure, but it's easy. Easy to forget it all when she's constantly under the influence of whatever she can get her hands on. But her smile is wide, and her grip is tight around her, if a little sloppy.] Well. Not home. We're staying here for a while, but I think she likes playing with the pretty dresses I've gotten. [MK clearly is steering away from talking about the fact that Delilah is spending most of her time at home while her surrogate parents are out doing whatever.] She's thrilled to be back around Adam.

[Wren notices that the grip is sloppy, but it's still a grip, and she's thankful for that. She'd worried that MK had gone too far, gotten too lost, but here she is, and maybe it isn't perfect, but it's something. She's okay with grabbing onto little somethings these days.] She was very well behaved. [It's a tiny lie. Delilah reminds Wren so much of MK, all sweetness until the mood strikes.] How is Adam? [She asks the question while looking around, as if she expects Adam to materialize.]

[MK believes the lie. She doesn't see the flaws in that perfect little girl, not yet, nothing except the girl's love for a man who doesn't even really want either of them around.] She's an angel. She keeps talking about Gus, and all the other kids there. She really misses him, and I think she misses kids around her own age. [She's using Wren as a bit of a post, leaning against her slightly both with affection and intoxicated need. She spies the look.] He's not here. [She offers Wren a flimsy smile.] He's okay, I guess.

She had a lot of them for a little while. She and Sadie got along too. [Sadie, who is bright and happy and doesn't have a mood swing to her name.] We should have playdates for the three of them. [It sounds so normal, and she's trying to cling to normal and make it her own lately. Normal isn't the heavy weight of MK's body against hers, though, and she motions to a little table with chairs.] Sit and talk to me a little? I don't have to do anything for a little bit yet. [She isn't surprised to learn Adam isn't there.] How are the wedding plans going?

Who's Sadie? [MK's eyebrows crinkle, and while she probably was told who had whose kid before, she doesn't remember right now in the haze. Oh well. She nods at the suggestion of playdates.] She'd really like that. I'm not sure if- maybe Adam can bring her. [Who knows with all the fucked up powers she had what she could do around little kids. But, she smiles at the offer and nods, clearly forgetting whoever she has been with at the show. She slides over to the table and into the chair.] Oh those? [A beat.] Fine, they're fine. We're- with everything going on, you know. It's hard to focus.

Sadie is Kyle's little girl. Do you remember him from Seattle? [Seattle is so far away, and she honestly can't remember who knew who anymore.] Why would Adam need to- [But then she remembers why they had Delilah in the first place. MK looks so normal right now, and it's hard to imagine anything wrong with the beautiful redhead. Well, anything other than the drugs and the signs of drug use, which she's kind of come to expect from MK.] You look okay. Is it hard to control? [She doesn't actually know what it is, and she hopes the question is open-ended enough.]

[A shake of her head. She might remember him, but she doesn't want to bother sifting through all of that. Seattle is her biggest heartache still.] Delilah's talked about a little girl a lot, but I didn't know- Having kids around her age would be good. I think it'd be good. [A long, long frown. MK tries so hard not to think about any of that either, but it's always there. It's always, always there.] There's always buzzing in my head. I can always hear it, Wren. I can always hear things.

[The buzzing seems more important than the kids, and hearing things sounds even more troubling and important than that.] What kind of things? [It's almost a whisper, careful and quiet.] Things other than the buzzing?

[A frown, and she's trying so hard not to rifle into Wren's head. So, so hard.] Voices. [And she laughs harshly.] I hear people's thoughts, Wren. I'm trying not to, but. Yeah. [And it's clear that's not the only thing going on with her.]

[The look she gives MK is deer in headlights, and she immediately tries to school what she's thinking, which just make her think about things she doesn't want to think about. It's a panicked expression, and it's not gone by the time she speaks again.] And you can't turn it off?

[MK sees the panicked expression, and she can't help when her mind starts to pick up things. Nothing serious, practically inaudible whispers, but they're there among the buzzing of drugs and alcohol. Another harsh laugh.] I wish. [Her eyes downcast.] I can control things with my mind, too. And the day I found out, the day that whatever happened? Spider-Man. Isn't that fucking hilarious? [And clearly, clearly that's been the worst thing of all.]

[The surprise is genuine. Really, really genuine.] What things can you control? [She can't even control her own mind, and she can't imagine controlling anyone else's. But there is such a long pause after, such a long, long pause when Spider-Man is mentioned.] Was he a lot like-

[She stops before she finishes the sentence. She suspects she doesn't need to finish it at all, and she wonders how bad a thing even starting the sentence in the first place is.]

I ripped up part of Central Park. [Simple, as if that's normal.] Trees, boulders, fire whatever, I don't know. [Dismissive wave, then her speech goes quick.] Spider-Man, he came- he came and he stopped me. Talked me down, and oh god he was so much like him, Wren. It hurt, it hurt, and I can't- [A jagged sigh, and the buzzing from the drugs subside slightly for the whispers of voices in her head. She groans, covering her hears like that might stop it all.]

[She doesn't stop to think before leaning forward and wrapping her arms around the redhead.] It's okay. It's okay. [She just repeats it, a hand sliding against MK's back reassuringly, up and down, but none of that sounds okay, not really. And she wonders, again, where Adam is. Why isn't he here? Why isn't he helping MK deal with this?]

[Wren hated Adam before this, but now she hated him more, and no matter how hard she tried to think about not hating him - well, she just hated him a little bit more every time she tried not to hate him at all.

In the background, her boss called all the girls off the floor, and she sat back reluctantly, and then she stood reluctantly. She squeezed her friend's hands, quick, quickasthat.] Come see me? Anytime. I'll make us lunch. Bring Delilah? [Not scared, the offer said. Not scared.

Then, with a reluctant squeeze of fingers, she turned and followed the other girls.]
