He nodded. "Ja. It is a form of evolution, how all living things adapt to become better with the free will God gave us." He was doing his best to explain it in a way that she might better understand, however slightly. "Our blood contains things called genes, things that let us have different hair color, eye color, how tall we are, things that make us all different and unique."
Kurt smiled. Most people, even in his time, would have been running screaming from him but Mary seemed rather poised and calm. "Usually evolution takes hundreds of years if not longer. But then nature, by God's will, allows a sudden drastic change." He shrugged. "I do not know why God made me this way. Perhaps it is a way to prove to people that outwardly appearances do not matter, but what is in a person's heart and soul." He shrugged again, shifting a little so his tail wouldn't fall asleep.
He looked at her, his yellow eyes soft and kind. "You have a strong will and open mind Fraulein Mary. Many people, even in my time, would be fleeing from me in fear by now. The people, the humans who are not called mutants, fear me and those called mutants. And fear is a powerful weapon. I pray every day that it might one day stop. So that there can be peace across our world, for some will always fear what they do understand. But if I can change just one mind that they need not fear me, then my life was a success in that."
