[Jonathan didn't look up when she came in, didn't do anything to indicate that he had even noticed her entrance until she spoke up. Only then did he mark his place with a scrap of paper hastily torn from a newspaper and close the book, letting it stay in his lap as though he was ready to open it back up in a moment's notice.
