Carol pretended like the cat was a chore, but anyone who spent any amount of time around the apartment could see that the lady doth protests too much. It was obvious how spoiled the feline was. Jessica's words gave her pause, which, in turn, made her stop petting the cat. Whether Chewie sensed a shift in her demeanor or simply was annoyed that her mistress stopped petting her, the cat started to purr. Loudly. Pointedly, if one were inclined to think so. Clicking her tongue, Carol scratched under the cat's chin. "Guess that shouldn't surprise me. Least it's reassuring to know that even a Steve who doesn't really know me still cares."
Not that it was in Steve's blood to not care. And of course Jess hit the nail on the head. "...yeah." Her free hand moved to pinch the bridge of her nose briefly. "I thought I should have felt something, but--" But, she hadn't. And it bothered her. Her hand moved in a fluid motion, brushing hair back from her forehead, stopping once it was in a position that she could prop her head on it. "And not once did I think about the possibility that my mom and brother might be in that mess. Who does that?"
And how could she explain that to relative strangers?
