"Known him since I was born, or near that long. He and my sister were sweethearts all through their school time." She looked over the woman driving, those features real similar to her brother's, only more delicate. "Shane's a real good friend to him, like a brother, I think. It's real good he's got someone like that." It was genuine; she meant it, and it was plain as the nose on her face.
Other things. "I'd give near anything to have clothes that fit, something pretty that wasn't dug out of a man's closet." She grinned, mischief and trouble. "And I wouldn't mind some soap that didn't smell like it was meant to clean stink off prisoners' parts."
She pointed at the turn-off. "There."
And, thank goodness, there wasn't a dead thing in sight. The girls loaded up, and Clem got her pretty dress, easy as could be.
