It could be nothing. It probably was nothing. Just too many years of vigilantism leaving him paranoid, following a lead that probably wasn't a lead at all and just a waste of time instead. But—Luke had to check it out, even though he wasn't sure what 'it' was. Maybe nothing, but maybe, maybe, something. It didn't occur to him that he might he following trouble—well, no, it did. But he could handle trouble. Better than most people, in fact.
He moved more slowly than he would've liked, but following the scent required concentration and more than a little bit of backtracking. It got muddled up easily, and then he had to stop, find it, and start again. There was no name connected to it, no face, just the memory of a figure and familiarity that struck a chord. Any thoughts of just letting this go were lost pretty quickly—if he was putting the effort in, might as well see it through, right?
Down the alley he went, turn, across the street, trying to appear casual and not like he was tailing someone. It was easier once he was in the alleyway, less people, and he regarded the chain link fence with its 'NO TRESPASSING' proclamation. Scaling fences, hah, that was child's play. Up he went, with the ease of a big cat, and he paused on top to catch the scent. Head cocked, he realized it was up.
Well, okay. Scaling buildings was easy too.
But when he got to the roof, there was nothing. No one. Luke looked around, tried to find some entrance, someplace to hide, but there was just concrete and a boarded up door. Brow furrowed, he began to wonder if he really had just wasted a bunch of time—but no, wait, the scent was still here. He followed it to the door, the boarded up door, and noticed one of the boards hanging loose. Okay, so somebody knew to cover their tracks.
He yanked a couple of the boards free and tried the door, pushing it open with his shoulder. It scraped as it opened, but it did open, and it didn't look like he was the first to be here, either. Luke reached back for his gun, flicked the safety off, and slipped through the opening.
