Re: Wren and Evie in the Dustbowl
[When Wren was young, there hadn't been friends to rely upon, and there hadn't been family members to call when things were really, really bad. It was just her and her maman, and the big bad world, and she thought things should be different now. If she needed help, she thought she should be able to ask for it, and she thought the people she loved should do the same. Maybe it came from a life of not having, and now she wanted that feeling of family and close friends. She wasn't very good at the friends part, but Evie was more family than friend anyway, at least Wren felt that way. She didn't want anyone to keep their messes contained, but she knew Evie and Luke, and she knew they were just trying to keep the bad things away from her.
She smiled about the access to really good dim sum, and she nibbled on a piece and glanced over at Daisy, lover of macaroni and cheese.] It was macaroni and cheese with Gus first. For a year he wouldn't eat anything else, but now it's chicken nuggets shaped like dinosaurs. Sometimes they don't have it at the store, or they only have the ones shaped like blobs, and those are really bad days. [Her smile said she didn't mind. Gus, at first, hadn't complained about anything ever, and she thought it was good, that he trusted enough now to get sulky over a chicken nugget.] Lia eats everything she can fit into her mouth.
[She thought about the bed, about the lack of yard sales.] We can try Craigslist too, or thrift stores. Or we can get some wood and try to put one together, and we can call Luke and make him finish when we get it wrong. Or, [Eyes epiphany bright] we can call your friend from work.
