Re: Wren and Evie in the Dustbowl
[Evie hugged Wren tight. Not quite wanting to let go, but she did let her into the apartment at last and let her do her hellos to puppies and toddlers and give her new place the once over.
She knew Wren worried, she knew Wren worried a lot. And she didn't want her to worry. She wasn't doing perfect. She was far from it. But she had a place that was hers. And that was a step in the right direction. And no one could make her leave. And it wasn't a motel. And it wasn't a perfect place, and Evie thought it suited her. Something about it. She didn't know what. She wanted to make it home. Her home. She'd never had one that was just hers before. Not really. Even the little basement studio in Queens had been one room and a walk in close that had been converted into a little room for Daisy but that was all she could do with it. This, she could do almost anything. Paint. Scrub. Hang things. This felt different.
She looked almost relieved when she said she loved it. And said her front desk was better than a couch.
While Wren hopped up on the front desk, which Evie had done plenty of times already herself, she grabbed some of the food and let Daisy free from her dinner to go running around with the dog. In the very big apartment. She brought the containers of food, over to the front desk and hopped up next to Wren, and smiled at her.] It's huge. [She said with a laugh.] I have a corner office bedroom. Daisy has a room. I have another room to put things in. [She nodded playfully toward the kitchen] I have tons of other counters for you to sit on. But this is my favorite seat too. And not just because the only other seat is that one. [She pointed at the toddler chair and table in the kitchen area where Daisy had been making a mess with dim sum and left her sippy cup turned over on its side. The shopping purchases upon moving in were mostly geared toward cleaning and toddlers. She was getting Daisy squared away first. Then she could do things like look for a couch and a real bed.]
