[Matthew's irritation visibly dimmed at this mention of a barter system. He didn't argue with Matthew about being a fiction (in his mind, Matthew equated that with a fairy figment, and he had been duly insulted, in a vague fashion), and also did not respond to his admittedly intentional prod. Matthew enjoyed people who were not in the pay of anyone, because most of his acquaintance had enough interior motive to double-cross three countries before tea. His mouth abruptly relaxed into sudden warmth.]
Ay, an ambulance. I had not thought you might be without practice. [He actually said it with more approval than anything, as if the idea of Bruce as a country doctor with no strings appealed to him--which, of course, it did.]
