[It's amusing the way he's pressed close to her, clutching through his fear of death. Really, she wouldn't let him die, but she does slam on the brakes hard enough to send the end of the bike wiggling like a fish on a hook. A car behind her swerves to miss them and crashes into a parking meter instead.] Bly. [She starts out sweet and soft.] Is this some sort of liberal bleeding heart worry? Peace isn't good. Every major advancement in the course of civilization has been proceeded by war. World War II [did she just shiver in delight?] brought in the nuclear age, TV, even computers, radar, sonar, synthetic rubber, even multi track audio recording and jet engines. The American Civil War brought advancements in medicine. Rifles that no longer had to be reloaded after a single shot, submarines, balloons, the railroad, the telegraph machine, and photography. That photography required multiple camera operators and lots of chemicals. Do you like movies, Bly?
If so, thank the American Civil War. And stop worrying about peace. It hasn't done nearly as much for you.
