log: carnage comes home
Who: Carnage, Peter Parker, Flash Thompson
What: "Gwen Stacy" goes back to Aunt May's house to recuperate.
Where: Aunt May's house
When: After the fight on the Turnpike.
Warnings/Rating: Creepiness.

It comes in through the bedroom window, slides through a gap the width of a needle as smoothly and easily as water pouring through a sieve. By the time it's completely reached the other side, it's Gwen Stacy.

It is Gwen Stacy.

Well, it's close, anyway. It's blonde, and the face is right, but the eyes are green. The hair is too long, hanging well past the shoulders. The hands are too small, just a little, and it's a few inches too tall. But it is Gwen Stacy.

It needs somewhere quiet, somewhere safe. This house will be safe for Gwen Stacy. The people here care about her, love her, and want her to be alive. It knew how to find the bedroom of the boy because it remembers, and here is the bed Gwen Stacy remembers also.

The room smells familiar. The bed smells familiar. InTO tHE BeD.

Gwen Stacy climbs in. Yes, familiar and safe. She'll be safe here, and the woman who owns the house, (Aunt May, a crackling static voice fills in) isn't at home. She pulls the blankets over her naked shoulders. She is bare, as if she were only just born, and she buries her face in the pillow.

She feels her face melt away. She waits, tense, for a moment, and it all comes back again. The eyes are brown now, probably.

She clings to the soft pillow and smells its smell, like Peter Parker. She presses her tongue to the pillowcase. It is human, soft and pink.

Yes. Safe.

Peter was tired. He was tired and he was miserable because yeah, sure, helping people was great but he'd lost Carnage again. By the time he'd had a chance to look there was no sign of it anywhere, and he'd ended up webslinging around in circles.

Where would it go? He had no idea. Somewhere quiet? Secluded? Too many options, and no way to track it.

All he wanted to do now was sleep. He knew Aunt May wouldn't be home but he came in through his bedroom window anyway, because it was habit, and he was kind of on autopilot. Still suited up, he climbed up over the sill and tugged off his mask as soon as his feet hit the ground. He sucked in a deep breath and let it out, a long exhale; it could get stuffy in there sometimes. And so much'd happened in the past few days that taking a few seconds to breathe, it made him feel a little less like he was suffocating.

He shuffled toward the bed with a yawn, and he wasn't even planning on changing. No, the plan was to yank the top part of his suit over his head and fall into bed, but... someone else was already there.

Normally he didn't spook easily but this, this spooked him. Alarm bells sounded in his head and he stumbled back with a yelp, banging into his bedside table and knocking over his lamp.

She turned her head, starting at the presence of someone else. Ah, Peter Parker. She sat straight up in the bed, alarmed.

"Peter." She still clutched the blankets around her. She seemed frightened, and weakened. Her skin was pale, too pale, but the eyes were right, now. That is, back to green, so still wrong, but closer. Closer every time. She ran through a hundred memories of Peter Parker, her Peter Parker, and she reached out a hand to him. "Peter, it's okay. It's me." Her eyes were frightened, but beseeching. Her hand looked warm, pink, and human. There was nothing alien here, only a frightened, confused girl, who seemed as surprised to be in Peter's bed as he was to find her there.

The person in his bed sat up, and Peter stared. Blankets clutched around her, blonde hair, pale skin... she looked scared.

She looked scared.

She.

Her.

Gwen.

But Gwen was dead. His brain picked the worst times to be logical, piping up with that little tidbit of information even though he wished, just once, that it would shut up. Because the one thing he wanted most, so badly the yearning was pain, was for Gwen to be alive. He'd never seen her remains, after all. Never seen any evidence that what SHIELD said was true. All he had was Flash's word, and maybe... maybe he'd been wrong. Maybe SHIELD'd lied. It was possible, right? They'd just waged war out on the streets, it wasn't like they were trustworthy. So maybe, maybe there was a way for Gwen to actually be here, an explanation that didn't involve it not being Gwen.

(But Gwen didn't have green eyes.)

There was that annoying logic again. "Gwen?" His voice came out sounding a lot weaker than he would've liked. "How... You..." He looked at her outstretched hand, torn. Part of him knew he shouldn't touch her, because it might not be her and he couldn't remember if Carnage could shapeshift, could it make itself look like a dead person? (This was something he should know.) But he didn't, and slowly, slowly, Peter reached out to (carefully!) brush his fingers against hers, because if it wasn't Gwen then she'd feel weird, right?

Nothing happened when he touched her fingers. They didn't sprout claws, or turn red. She was warm, real flesh, not just the appearance of it. "Did I die?" she asked. Her eyes were searching, searching. For meaning, for memory she didn't have, for something she wasn't, for something she was, but couldn't believe.

Then, "Is it safe here?" Yes. Here needed to be safe. She was hURt, though there wasn't a visible scratch on her, and her hand didn't tremble. Peter Parker couldn't leave. He needed to stay here with her. That made sense, that made sense. "That follows, logically," she said, and smiled, a weak smile, the smile of someone who has just remembered the name they'd forgotten, the smile of someone who has found a comfortable place to hide, complete with a protector to keep them secret.

But it could be BeTTeR, yes. "Flash," she said, without preamble. That was his name. He had Venom, did Flash. "Where is he?"

The relief was visible in Peter's expression when she didn't, you know, turn into red goop and try to eat him. She felt human, felt real, and he so very badly wanted that to be enough. (Even though Gwen didn't have green eyes.) He didn't pull his hand back, nope, and he squeezed her fingers when she asked if she'd died. It was a question he really, really didn't want to answer, but he couldn't lie. "Yeah." There was so much he wanted to say—sorry in a million different ways, mostly. There was a lot he wanted to ask, too, he just didn't know where to start. And, okay, there was a tiny voice in his head insisting that he not drop his guard just yet.

But there was still no hesitation at all when she asked if it was safe. He nodded. "It's safe. You're safe. Promise." Not that his promises meant much, because he'd promised that he wouldn't let her die. He could also be promising something very much not Gwen that it was safe; obviously, he hoped it wasn't that. The little quip about logic, though, that was so Gwen, and he couldn't help giving a weak smile in return.

Then she asked about Flash. He looked at her. "Uh. I'm not sure." He paused. "Do you... want me to tell him?"

"Yes," she said, without hesitation. She seemed worried, but it was a full-body anxiousness. It didn't seem to begin anywhere or resolve anywhere. It was a slight trembling and a wavering as she sat up, leaning variously from side to side. She seemed unsteady, pleading, but her eyes were distant, looking past him. "Yes, please."

Flash Thompson and Venom. They would help, when they came to the house. Variously, she had visions of the boy arriving, of him sitting down on the bed to comfort her with a hand on her shoulder, playfully abusing her, teasing her about being dead. Then there was another vision, parallel to the first, of an indigo colored monster slamming the front door open, of her closing wide jawsfull of white white teeth around its twisting, turning head, of wrapping her tongue around its neck.

In her jaw, her tongue felt too long. She didn't open her mouth until the bulge of it subsided, shortened, returned to human length.

"Please get him."

Coming back from the dead would upset anyone. Peter could easily explain her worry that way, chalk up the unsteadiness and the distance in her eyes to trauma, because he had no idea how this'd happened or what she'd gone through before ending up in his bed. Then again, it might not be Gwen at all. Wanting to believe something didn't make it true. But one thing was clear—she wanted Flash here. Which, maybe, was a good idea. Worst case scenario, it'd be Venom and Spider-Man against... whatever she was. Best case? It really was Gwen, alive, and they could keep her safe.

"Okay." He let go of her hand and turned, slightly apprehensive about having his back to her but, hey, he had to find his phone. Which was on the table, buried under some haphazardly tossed clothes. need you to come to my place ASAP he typed, but hesitated before pressing send.

Gwen didn't have green eyes. Peter kept coming back to that.

might be trouble, not sure yet.

There. Better. Send, and he looked up and over at her. "He'll come. Don't worry, okay? Everything's gonna be fine." As if to prove it, he moved closer to the bed and sat.

Escaping Tony Stark's tower was not easy and Flash insisted on doing it alone. Pride was a fucked up thing like that. He had seen the Hydra agent assholes running through and he had to crawl all the way to his sleeping quarters to get to Venom before they could. Explosions, death and fire followed and Venom was a trembling mess once he got to the suit. He had to comfort it. Things were different now. He didn't know how to explain it, but the alien goop was different and if anyone else figured it out he'd probably have to keep it locked up like Carnage. But, Venom was his friend. Venom was the last thing that made sense anymore and he'd rather bond with the damned thing than lose it.

He put on the suit and made his way out of the tower to escape. Once down, he spent hours and hours working on recovery and making sure people were alive. He listened back to the comms, looked at the info about Carnage and cursed that he couldn't have been there to stop it himself. He figured Pete could give him a better run down of everything and if the two of them went after Carnage, they'd have a much better chance of succeeding.

So yeah, he was already on his way over to Pete's by the time his phone buzzed with a message. Might be trouble wasn't really a great descriptor (thanks Pete) but it made him swing a hell of a lot faster. Only minutes after the message was sent, Flash was at Peter's front door. No one home except Peter upstairs. He couldn't even sense the would-be Gwen Stacy, so maybe the threat had passed? Venom turned to liquid, seeping through under the door like black tar and silently snaking up the stairs to Pete's room.

He formed with the sound of water and goo globbing together, standing in the doorway in his hulking football player from hell form. He saw Gwen. He saw Peter. He could only fucking sense one of them. "Hell is going on here?" His white eyes didn't change, his voice was like liquid sliding across glass.

She was quiet until Flash came. When Peter turned around, nothing happened. She wanted his trust, almost as much as she wanted Flash to come with Venom. She wanted both things, and the injury had scattered them, made them both seem possible. When he sat down next to her, she leaned into his side, breathed in his comforting scent. Parker had to leave eventually, and then she would be alone with Flash.

And vENoM. There it was, yes, there in the doorway. Was it desperation or madness from the injury that made the thing so sure, so very sure? The child would devour the parent and it...she would have everything for herself.

She wavered on a knife's edge of confusion when he arrived clad in Venom, splitting writhing black tentacles and inspecting her.

Waiting was safe. Waiting for Venom to let its guard down, that was the right way forward. But she was so HuNGRy, and surprised to see him just as she wanted him to be. In her happy anticipation, the facade dropped.

The blonde's face melted grotesquely as the DNA that had built her stopped behaving itself, as it fragmented and the flesh of her was partially reabsorbed back into the symbiote that had built it, this host, this girl. It knew, she knew, and thought went tripping down down down, splayed open, like the skin of her dripping face.

"iS ShE StILL PrEttIeR ThAN ME? she asked, in the chirruping, wet voice of Gwen Stacy with a tongue the length of one of her white arms, and then she lunged at Venom, hands already barbed into claws, mouth dropped wide and open as the night.

Even without his ability to sense Carnage, Flash knew exactly what the fuck was going on. "Fuck you, she's dead." Black tentacles shot out from Flash's back, reaching around his body to engulf him in ooze. Long, needle sharp teeth broke through the sea of black, snapping at the sing-song Gwen Stacy. There was a high pitched hiss and a SCCREAMMM that sounded like a monster from some campy drive-in sci-fi movie from the 50's. It was so loud and sharp that it shook the room they were all crowded in.

"Fight it, Parker. Kill it. Fire, fire!" Venom hissed all alien and Flash's gruff voice somewhere washed out in the back. Black ooze formed a hulking mass so tall that it hit and smashed the ceiling, filling the room with white dust. Another snap of its jaws and it bit down on any red it could find, not caring about the barbs, the claws, the teeth. It bit like it wanted to kill, wanted to eat. Carnage was faster, sharper. Venom was a large, hulking mass that oozed and pulled into the darkness.

It felt like Gwen, leaning against him. Green eyes were just a blip, Peter could overlook that, and he opened his mouth to explain before Flash got the wrong idea—

But then Gwen's face melted.

He was horrified, wide-eyed and scrambling away, putting distance between himself and the thing in his bed. His BED. Carnage lunged and he realized how stupid he was, how so very stupid; of course it wasn't Gwen, he should've known better, what the hell was wrong with him? Venom reared his head and the room shook, and Peter knew he needed to do something but there was some kind of disconnect between his brain and his body. He was slow, like slogging through quicksand.

Fight, Venom—Flash?—said. Kill it. Fire. Sure, he'd just whip out his trusty flamethrower and get right on it! But— there were matches downstairs. A lighter. A fireplace. Maybe in the grand scheme of ideas it wasn't spectacular but Carnage and Venom fighting to the death in his bedroom wasn't perfect either. Okay. No way was the thing that killed Gwen winning this one. "Hey!" Snikt went his webs, and sure, he wasn't a big bad symbiote, but he was quick. This corner, that wall, the ceiling, he made sure never to pause, using his webs to pull and yank and trip Carnage up.

Even injured, even drawn out of its comfortable hiding place in the construction of an old friend, Carnage was fast. When Venom shot up toward the ceiling and sent dust raining down on all of them, it slid forward, slipshod quick, through the beast's legs. It raked upward with claws that had flattened into blades, slamming them into the creature's legs. When Parker's web strung across it and slowed it down, it popped back up to its feet behind Venom, slicing the stringy web away.

It reached for Parker, leaping to the wall to follow him, crawling like a thing out of nightmare across the door to his closet. Gravity meant nothing to it. Now that this had all gone south, the best move it could make was to take Parker as a to-go meal and flee the scene. Venom could wait - uninjured, Carnage could beat him easily, but weakened, it might just be a fair fight. It didn't do fair. "CoME HeRE SweETHEART, I jUst WaNT TO HoLD YOu."

Venom howled in pain and collapsed in on itself. There were no legs, no arms, nothing except sharp teeth and wild white eyes that wanted to kill even if it wasn't sure if there was someone in there. Soon, the teeth and eyes vanished, too and all that was left was black ooze. Pure black liquid soaked the floorboards, regenerating life and energy as Carnage scurried after Peter. A moment passed, as if the black puddle was all that was left of Venom and then there was a loud, rumbling scream as the black liquid bubbled.

Still formless, still nothing except goop moving like a wave, Venom hurdled towards Carnage, knocking the wall of Parker's room down as black tried to consume sharp, pointed red. They tumbled into the hallway, Parker's house shaking by the very foundation. "I'm going to fucking kill you this time." Flash's voice mixed with that low bass electric tone of alien. Teeth chomped at red, sometimes missing and digging up floorboards or family pictures. A tongue lolled out of its mouth and sloppily tried to tied up Carnage like he was going to tear it limb from limb.

Peter had no desire to be eaten. Gwen hadn't either, obviously, but he tried not to think about that—how she'd probably fought, and it hadn't been enough. No. No. He wasn't going down like this. "No thanks," he spat, as Carnage came his way, "I have boundary issues. Red-goopy-tentacle-things off." The symbiote was fast, which meant there wasn't room for mistakes. At all. One misstep and it'd be the opportunity Carnage needed to sink his claws into the over-sized spider.

Okay, so Venom turning into a puddle of black ooze was less than reassuring—he had no idea if it was good or bad. Maybe he was, like, healing? Regenerating? A second later, he had his answer. Venom let out some kind of scream and hurdled towards Carnage, and Peter? Peter got out of the way. Which was a good thing, because if he'd been a few seconds slower he would've been knocked down along with his wall.

(If Carnage didn't get there first, Aunt May was going to kill him.)

Getting out of the way seemed smart, since Carnage and Venom were locked in some kind of death grip battle royale and his house was one of the casualties. Sure, he could grab a lighter, put together a makeshift flamethrower, but what if he ended up hurting Venom too? The best thing to do, he thought, was help Venom out in his quest to tear Carnage apart. Snikt, rapid fire, he tried to use his webs to immobilize the symbiote and keep it still.

The symbiote screeched. It was the kind of noise that climbs out of a throat and into yours, making you want to scream too. That scream had Gwen's voice in it, and then the symbiote had her face, a gross parody of what had come before, scarlet knives for arms with a blonde head and rolling eyes painted blood red and blind. "PETER."

He hadn't expected this. She hadn't nO. pETer was supposed to SaVE hER, not bind him in place with webs while its writhing legs were caught in the black wave subsuming it. It had underestimated Venom. It had been so distracted by Parker that it didn't know Venom was on top of it before it was too late and the hallway was a tide of black, and the cells of it where it touched were dissolving into the separated building blocks of DNA falling away unmatched from one another. But the screaming. So much to DO.

In the end, it really did seem as if it thought Parker might save it. Its claws punched through the floorboards and it held fast, pulling hard to try to lever what was left of it away from the wash of dAddY eating it ALIVE. Gwen's face on that spindly scarlet body, coughing under webs as that long pink tongue wrapped around it. Scarlet hands melting and reforming into a rudimentary chainsaw, hacking at the tongue while it screeched.

Venom arched back, its tongue caught by the revving of Carnage's chainsaw. Black and red sprayed the Parker house's walls like a fucked up horror sci-fi and the various kinds of screaming and bellowing made the whole thing feel like a haunted house. It's just a haunted house. Gwen's voice echoed in Flash's head and he looked down at the nightmare imitation of her face. The tongue broke like a fish being torn apart by a shark and Venom oozed back up against the hallway ceiling.

Once again taking the shape of a bulky, heavily armored man, Venom stuck hands against the wall, feet tucked under knees like he was imitating the usual stance of a hiding Spider-Man. He turned to see if Peter was okay (he was) and then looked down at the screaming sharp red below.

"I never saw you in Silent Hill." It was all Flash's voice this time with only a little water under it. He reached into his utility belt and pulled out an energy grenade that Gwen had been working on to combat Carnage. He clutched it in his fist and then suddenly shot back down to the floor, forcing Carnage's mouth open and stuffing the live grenade down, down before holding the creature's mouth shut. The blast would probably hurt him to, maybe even kill him, but Flash didn't really care about surviving anymore.

The good news (for everyone but the symbiote) was that Carnage itself took most of the blast. The energy shredded it, molecule from molecule, and it hardened against the host body it had built at the moment of impact. This kept the body inside its roiling mass from being torn apart, but it did tear it off a live, human form. Carnage went one way, and the girl went the other.

The symbiote splattered over the walls, the carpet, and the men standing as obstacles in its way. It quickly began to reconstitute itself, but it wasn't moving as fast as before - limping, in its alien way, back to itself. There was no more thought, not another gleeful shriek, just the burbling keen of a desperate thing, trying to pull itself back together before - before -

The girl that was thrown free of the goop was just a girl. Scientifically, Gwen would be able to explain the process by which Carnage created an actual, living host from things consumed; she had that knowledge. Scientifically, that knowledge was still there. Like everything else, it belonged to the body that Carnage had crafted. She was no projection, no shifting of shape, she was a replicate, identical in every way. Whether or not she was Gwen Stacy, that was a moral dilemma, because the girl the symbiote had consumed was very much dead, and what remained of her was very much in a box in a local cemetery, her name on a headstone and flowers on dirt that had already begun to grow its own grass.

But the girl tossed across the room with a smack of blonde hair, she was just a girl.

She blinked away the blackness that the impact with the wall brought, fingers moving up to touch blonde hair that was blood-sticky. Her vision blurred, and her confusion was written on her features as clearly as dots filled in on Scantrons. There were things missing, she reasoned, because she didn't immediately understand where she was or how she'd gotten there. But Peter and Flash-Venom came into blue-eyed focus, amid the carnage (hah!) of... Aunt May's(?). The limping symbiote registered next, and she pushed herself to standing on new-doe legs against the wreckage of the wall at her back.

Red splattered across black and Flash could taste the bloody plastic of Carnage in his mouth. He tried to spit it out, but it stayed in Venom until the older, more authentic alien could consume it whole. He rolled off to the side, black tentacles wrapped in red that glowed, blinked and then faded into the darkness. Ooze formed his body, that nightmare football player form and then the black inched off his face.

He sat up and looked, seeing the blonde and immediately pulling a gun out to point at her head. This wasn't how it was supposed to go, right? "Hey." There wasn't any hostility in his voice, just a warning. "The fuck?" Flash looked up at Peter and his blue eyes said wait and see instead of attack.

"You're not Gwen." It was a whisper, more to himself than to Carnage when the symbiote screamed his name in her voice. Not Gwen. Not Gwen. Peter held his webs steady, let Venom-Flash do his thing, and steeled himself for the blast. The damage to his house was nothing in comparison to the prospect of killing it for good. They couldn't bring Gwen back—thinking of that, of his purpose being gone and just loss left behind made his chest ache—but they could make sure Carnage didn't hurt anyone else. She'd want that.

He expected to be sprayed in red goop. Splattering the walls, him, Venom-Flash, that happened when alien symbiotes exploded. But the girl? That he didn't expect. Wide-eyed, he stared, totally oblivious to Venom consuming Carnage or... whatever it was doing.

Attacking the blonde never occurred to him. It should have, considering that Carnage had been in his bed masquerading as Gwen just minutes ago, but Peter wanted so, so very badly to believe in even the faintest glimmer of hope, and this was something new to cling to. He webbed down from his perch where ceiling met wall, and he nodded to Flash before taking a step towards the girl. "Gwen?"

Blue eyes, he noticed. She had blue eyes.

The blonde girl looked back and forth between the creature and the boy in blue and red. She looked around the space outside the room, where the fight had spilled into. She looked at what remained for the ooze and goop, and she tried to paint a scenario of what she'd missed. She searched her mind for the last thing she recalled, and her head ached too much for her to grasp understanding, no matter how she tried.

But she knew something was wrong. Something was different, even if the most recent memories before her death hadn't registered yet. And there was nothing from this situation. The entire fight was a blank, and she only knew it was a fight because of external indicators.

"Carnage?" she asked, and she sounded like the dead girl, her intonation precisely the same and the confusion registering on her face in exactly the same manner.

She glanced down, toward the floor and the detritus there, and hazy recollection began gathering behind cornflower blue eyes. She stuck to the wall a little as she pulled away from it, her control of her abilities reset to something remedial, and she glanced at the nearest window, at what remained of the stairs, eyes obviously attempt to ascertain the best escape route. "I kind of don't feel great. I should go."

Flash didn't care if it walked like Gwen, talked like Gwen, quacked like Gwen, right now he was going to keep his gun on the blonde. And, if anyone in that torn up house didn't think he'd shoot the blue out of her eyes just for looking at him funny, they were in for a surprise. "You really shouldn't." He said and his voice was all soldier, all warning. He couldn't let himself believe this was his best friend, the girl he lost and everyone else was a lot better at mourning. The girl he said he loved, even if every other boy in her life was a lot better at showing it. Here, in the Parker residence, there was no love in his voice. "Carnage took your form and ended up in Peter's room. We just finished fighting it and I think Venom destroy what was left- but you're here and we need to figure out why the fuck that is."

Black slowly crawled across his face and as his own blue eyes vanished behind the goopy veil, she could see he wasn't fucking around. It was a look she might have witnessed him give other people, but never her. If she tried to run, he'd treat her like a criminal first and a friend second. And that was fucked up, he knew that, but he was trained by General Ross and that motherfucker would have done the same damned thing.

Gwen liked puzzle pieces that fit, curved into corners and edges and logical. She understood that the gun pointed at her meant she was a threat, even if she didn't have a strong comprehension of why until Flash continued speaking. She looked at him for a moment longer, and then she glanced over at Peter, and then she looked back at her best friend and the gun he was holding.

She didn't consider any other escape avenues. Her searching gaze abandoned the window and stairs.

"Okay. I'll go wherever you need me to go." Because she was young and emotional at times, but she understood the threat Carnage posed. If she wasn't herself somehow, then she needed to be dealt with. Destroyed was a strong word, but she understood, and if Flash was saying was right? Then it meant the real her was... where? But she didn't need much scientific deduction to come to the correct conclusion there. "He consumed me. That's the only way he can recreate a host." She said it with only a hint of waiver to her voice. Understanding darkened her blue eyes and dampened them. Tears spilled over blonde lashes, and she didn't look at Peter when she nodded at Flash. "Where do we go?" Obliviously. "Stark Tower?"

Flash kept the gun on her a moment longer, the black over his face hiding any concern for her that he was feeling. The most she got was a squint of comic booky white eyes. When she realized she had been eaten, that was rough for everyone in the room, but Flash needed to be the strong one here. Pete could reassure her once they got her somewhere safe...for everyone. He slowly lowered the gun and holstered it. There wasn't anything he had that could restrain Carnage and Stark Tower was...shit. "HYDRA destroyed Stark Tower looking for you- for it." Flash looked at Peter and then back at Gwen.

"We need to run tests before we tell fucking anyone about this. I can keep guard. Pete, you need to supervise since I don't know any fucking science shit. Gwen, is the Chinatown Lab still ours?" Flash hooked his thumbs on his utility belt and sighed. "I figure once you start doing actual science we can surmise you're more Gwen than Carnage, or no Carnage if we're lucky." A blink of his white eyes. "Surmise. I don't think I used that word right."

It was a good thing Flash was there, because Peter? Was absolutely useless. He stared, and he stared, because he'd been so sure he'd lost Gwen again, so sure that he'd never see her again—maybe a different her, but not her—and now he was torn between throwing logic out the window and trying to rationalize what he was seeing. She looked like Gwen. Talked like Gwen. And Carnage was gone, Venom had— eaten it, or whatever, so it couldn't be the symbiote again. Could it? He started to shake his head when Gwen said she would go, because he didn't think that was a good idea; luckily, Flash had the words he didn't. Flash could keep a level head. Flash could explain.

His expression became something pained when she said he consumed me, and he'd had no idea that Carnage could recreate a host, no idea at all. He felt like he should say something, but he didn't know what. "Gwen—" Just that, a quiet sound, one word, when tears spilled over her lashes, but she didn't look at him, so he swallowed and said nothing else. There was goop in his hair, or something, and Peter focused on wiping that away instead.

He looked up when Flash said his name. Right. Supervise. He could do that. "Yeah. Okay." Tests were a good idea. He'd go wherever he was needed.

The girl was quiet for a few long minutes. She tried to imagine the destruction of Stark Tower, and she couldn't entirely wrap her head around her culpability, not with the blanks that still remained regarding the symbiote's escape. Why did HYDRA want Carnage, and why had they been looking for it at Stark Tower? She comprehended that there were a lot of pieces of this puzzle that she didn't have. Things were missing, and the image that was coalescing wasn't complete. But there was time to figure things out, she reasoned. If there needed to be testing (and there absolutely needed to be testing), then there would be time for all appropriate research before a decision was reached about what she was, and any subsequent action required.

She knew Peter would go easy on her, whatever she was, and so she was glad Flash was there, being inflexible with that blink of white eyes and his concern about misused words. "You used surmised right, brony," she said warmly, and then she took a long shaky breath. "I don't have Chinatown, and if I'm potentially still being controlled by or comprised of the symbiote, then we can't trust me to conduct testing."

She was quiet a moment longer, thinking, because if HYDRA was looking for Carnage, then it was safe to assume that S.H.I.E.L.D. remained compromised. "Mr. Stark has a lab under the Bay. I have biometric access. There are containment units there, and it's independent of the Stark Tower. There's no reason to assume it's not still standing. It should let me in, if there's enough of m- of Gwen in my genetic makeup." She stumbled on those final words. No, no, time for that later, and she blinked away tears. "How do you feel most comfortable conducting transport?"

A smile hidden by black goop and Flash resisted the urge to hug Gwen or really say anything about how much he missed her. Instead, he focused on the next option, which seemed a lot better than the Chinatown Lab. "A containment unit would give me time to power down. I can't be in this fucking suit for much longer anyway." Flash would have and everyone knew that, but it was safer for him to take it off and maybe take a fucking nap while she was locked up safely. "It's important that the whole fucking team of Avengers don't know right away. They'll try to take control or have a fucking pow-wow about it, when we already know what needs to be done. It would help to have another scientist work with Peter, and Stark will likely find out since it's his lab, but we can worry about that later."

Flash went quiet for a moment, thinking through their plan and then deciding it really was the best course of action. He looked up at Pete, a long look that translated even with the mask on. Flash needed Pete on his team, he trusted Pete even if they hadn't really worked together before in this kind of high stakes mission. "I'll tell everyone we blew up Carnage and there's no trace of him. That much pretty fucking close to the truth." Then he turned to look at Gwen. "I'll carry you. If you try and hurt me, Venom can take it." A pause and he pushed the fond thoughts of he riding piggyback out of his mind.

The one person Peter trusted with this was in the room with him. He knew that Flash would keep Gwen safe, plain and simple, and he was completely okay with not involving the Avengers. It was a good plan, the best they had. "We can handle it," he piped up, giving his friend a nod. He got the look. He understood. "We will." And he went looking for his mask while transportation plans were made, pulling it back over his head once he found it. Being able to hide behind it, obscured eyes and no expression, was something of a relief. He'd explain the damage to Aunt May later... somehow. Whatever. He'd figure it out.

This was more important anyway. Flash would carry Gwen, he and his webs could keep up just fine—better to focus. He could get all stupid and emotional later.
