Re: Apartment: Mingmei & Donna
"Lei ho," Donna was able to repeat that one with relative ease. The other phrase left her wide-eyed and stammering a bit to repeat it before the meaning sunk in. "Ni ch-" and she started to giggle, "Is that really what it means? That's the best greeting I think I've ever heard." And it really was. Beyond the offer of food, it made it sound like a very open and giving culture. "Ni che le fan?"
That life sounded so sad. Not Mingmei's in particular, but in general. It didn't explain why the third brother was unlucky, apart from costing the family money. Donna understood there was more to it than just that, but she didn't really understand. She supposed as a Westerner, there would always be strange mysteries of other cultures to uncover. Though, to be fair, no one had ever been able to answer why certain things in US culture were unlucky. Superstitions had always been one of those subjects that drove Donna nuts. Just pick up the penny. It doesn't matter what side is facing up. "I'm glad they did. I wouldn't have met you otherwise. You're very interesting."
Donna didn't think knowing about Superman or Harry Potter was that big of a deal. They were household names where she came from. "Oh, Dad is a huge nerd back home. I don't know nearly as much as he does, I don't think." A small shrug, "If I thought this would have come in handy, I would have read more comics instead of playing video games. Silly me for not thinking I'd be living down the road from Stark Tower." By more comics, she meant all. And if she were being entirely honest, she had read far more than the average person. Thanks, Dad.
"Speaking of video games..." As good of a segue as she would get. "I can set up a VPN, if you want to work on that code. You can work from where you like. Whatever hours. I'm not terribly picky. The game itself needs pretty much everything at the moment, and the apps are just basic maintenance or patch updates." Donna grew more animated as she spoke, obviously in her comfort zone now, "I'll have to go speak to investors, or sell some algorithm soon, so it can be a legit business. We'll need to hire a graphic designer at the very least, but not for a while. Graphics can always wait. When I can get all the legal matters dealt with, and everything is official, then I can offer you actual benefits. I'm sorry I can't right now."
