Re: Loggything: Penny and Clementine
"You got to push at men, honey. They're dumb as bricks, and not a thing between their ears but air. I spent enough time with your cousin to know that plenty. If the man's your friend and he took off, then you call and ask him if he's in one piece some. And once he's done whining, you ask him about working." Clem said it all like it was plain as the traffic around them, all real bright and brake lights making it plain how far to go before stopping.
She figured Penny's friend wasn't so different from the men she, herself, knew. Dumb to the last, and all in different ways, but she took Penny's word about calling the man come sobering, and she let it go.
"I borrowed her off one of the boys at work," she said, fingers caressing at the steering wheel. "Man's on three days, so he won't miss it any. Only place he'll be going's in something big and red." She pulled out hard at the light, the car next to her matching speed for a block, and then she looked on over to Penny, wondering if the woman had got squeamish any. She didn't want to return the car full of vomit. "We can suss out how fast it goes, if you don't mind detouring some." Her smile said she wouldn't mind it any herself. Wasn't a soul waiting on her anywhere.
