Flash & Jake: Marvel late night
Who: Jake R and Flash T
What: Late night guerrilla graffiti
When: Recently!
Warnings: None, unless Flash comes with language.

Late night there wasn't nobody or nothing bothering anyone in the streets. The kitchen had emptied out late, past three by the time the stove-tops had been scrubbed cleaner than they had been all damn week, ready for the weekend rush. The door swung open onto the street with a gush of steamy, soapy-warm air that smelled like old food and detergent and Jake flung the last refuse sack of empty bottles right on into the trash before he shouldered his bag. Late night like this one, and he took the long route back to the tuxedo house, way off across the park. Wasn't a hell of a lot of point in going to sleep real quick off, mostly because he'd have to do the whole thing again tomorrow, and he flexed his hands experimentally, testing all those wrinkles from the suds.

Thing was, the money from the kitchen and from the bar on Saturdays, it paid enough for groceries and for the bills to keep the lights on. It didn't go so far as the real fancy art stuff in the store downtown, the one where the oil paints came in white tubes and you had to go in and take them out of the little drawers to see what color was kept inside them. Jake itched for something other than pencil on cheap paper: it had been a real long time. Longer than a year, if he figured it right, because he didn't have nothing but ballpoint on notebook paper after he'd lit out to go looking for Vegas ghosts, stead of school.

But the walk past the trash sacks and toward the park took him past the real ugly, concrete buildings, the sides of the bridges and the kind of places people peed in corners and the cops didn't stop long. Maybe in daylight, it was real ugly, and maybe when the light was low and the people living round there were around in the street, just talking and stuff, it looked like someplace you avoided if you were skinnier than you had been when you played football, and you didn't have much to start with.

But at night? Street-light played over neon, and the arches and swoops of art that was right on show, no ticket for admission. And the money from the kitchen didn't stretch to oil paint, but it did go so far as aeresol. And he'd always figured you could do something with the brilliance of color and ease of shape and something with the real old, fine art that was in books he looked at in libraries, and mash em some together.

The bag dropped from his shoulder to his feet, worn Chucks on sidewalk, and the streetlamp sputtered and carried on, blinking over worn cotton shirt, damp some at the wrists. Jake arched one long streak of color, stood back, grinned strong and sudden in the oily orange light, and added another, real content.

Flash spent most of his nights as Venom. It meant he didn't need a social life and he could help people. Two birds, one stone. The most satisfying thing was he was gaining a reputation for being a super hero. People on his patrol routes started behaving a lot better, cops sometimes hailed him down to say hello or ask if he had seen anything and he even got a couple thank-you kisses. Venom even made some extra cash working security for anyone to the museums transporting old valuable shit to science labs with chemicals a mad motherfuck would steal to blow shit up.

What would have been a pretty shit life in a wheelchair was turning into something good. People started calling him Black-Spider, Bro-Spider, Spider-Soldier and Goop. He'd tell them It's Venom, dude and they'd look at him like they didn't fucking get it. The Spider thing used to get under his skin, but he figured there were so many people around now with spider powers that they were some kind of loosely bonded team. Even if he didn't really gel with the morals or whatever the fuck, it was nice to be in a team. So whatever, if people called him Spider, he'd get over it.

After checking the usual places for purse snatchers and drug dealers, Flash started swinging towards the edge of his patrol territory. He caught sight of a young dude streaking paint across old concrete. Taggers were way below his fucking paygrade, but it wouldn't hurt to shoo them the fuck off.

The sound of water splashing could be heard, like someone throwing out a bucket of suds, and Venom landed on the streetlamp above. "Hey, dude." Venom said, crouching on the metal beam that looked like it should be buckling under his weight because of how massive he was. "You probably shouldn't be tagging shit, man."

Jake looked up. Wasn't a thing in it, other than noise this time of night brought with it trouble. The arc of paint hissed to nothing, the metal of the can clacking to silence and he dropped it the minute he saw the big black whatever-it-was straight out of the pulpit's lectures on Sundays, of hellfire and places you all went if you dreamed of something that wasn't apple-pie wholesome.

His throat closed up like sand and his tongue got still and all the words that got themselves cracked and broken like glass, he couldn't even find the fragments. He backed up, the can rolling off the sidewalk and clanking heavily into the gutter, and Jake's face was sharp white relief, and eyes wide and panicked beneath the thick thatch of black hair.

Didn't hear a word or nothing about tagging, but he hadn't figured superheroes or hell demons were waiting around in this town to leap on you some if you were painting anyplace. His blood was rushing in his ears, and his lips were too stiff to remember the prayers some, but his heartbeat was stuttering up against his rib-cage.

But the paint, that wasn't going to get replaced easy, not with groceries and the power bill due any day. He bent, creaky-kneed, and nudged his fingers up against the can's edge, not taking his eyes off the hell-beast perched on the lamp.

Flash expected the dude to run or tell him to fuck off. Usually that was the response he got these days. But, this kid didn't seem to recognize him at all and looked up like he saw hellspawn. He sees us, Flash, Venom hissed in his ear and frowned because yeah alien goop was pretty on point. All this time spent trying to convince people that he was a hero when really the symbiote was a monster. A hellspawn. And the dude wearing the suit? Maybe he wasn't that different, either.

"Hey man, it's cool." Flash tried and instead of turning into liquid and dripping down to the ground, he just did a blackflip and landed a few feet away. "My name is Venom. I'm- I'm just trying to keep people safe. But, you don't look like you're in a gang so-" He shrugged and kept his distance, hoping the dude would run for it before crapping his pants or passing out or some shit. Flash really didn't want to drop this kid off at his home and explain this to his family.

Jake didn't run. His knees were shaking and his fingers, and the can slid greasily into his palm, watery sweat collecting along the metal. He didn't recognize Venom, he didn't recognize a damn one of the superheroes except those who were in the few comics he'd gotten from relatives who'd wanted him to hush and be quiet when he was small at gatherings. The ones he'd liked were the real moody kind, the artwork daunting. But this wasn't a Watchman.

The hellbeast backflipped, and Jake's heart stuttered in his throat. "I'm n-not in a gang," and the words fought real hard on the way out but he said them anyway. What kind of a name was Venom? Something real poisonous, something that scared people silly this time of night.

"You keep them safe, or you scare em to death?"

"It's chill, dude. It's chill." Venom said as the kid started to stutter and he thought about just leaving, but that was a little awkward, right? And, he didn't want this guy going to his friends and family talking about how there was some dude in black armor scaring the shit out of everyone. That thought crossed his mind just as the kid asked him what he was really out here for and it made his spiky shoulderpads turn into jelly before going completely smooth.

"Nah man. Well, if it's some shit trying to snatch purses or hurt someone, yeah. Then I scare them. But, you know normal people I just want to make sure they're doing okay." Flash touched the spider stretching long legs across his chest. "Is it the color? I can change that man, see?" The spider's legs wiggled as if it were painting the black around it red. The color spread across his suit in webbing, slowly making him look a lot more like a dude in red PJ's than a dude in black armor. In seconds, the black soldier from hell costume was the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man of red and blue. The only difference was he seemed a lot taller and bigger built than how Spidey was normally portrayed. "Should fucking just patrol the city like this, right?"

The color leached into the black, like dawn out of a dark night and Jake thought the colors blending like that, like there wasn't a beginning or an ending was just about the coolest thing he'd ever seen. He figured on maybe trying to replicate it, but the blend ended before he could get the details straight in his head, and then the hell-beast wasn't a hell-beast at all, but Spiderman.

Jake's grin was slanted; wry. His heartbeat slowed on down like butter melting. "That makes two Spider men?" Words didn't fight him so damn much when he didn't feel like he was gonna clatter out of his skin, but Jake knew the difference between this Spidey and the one in the newspapers. The proportions were all wrong: this one was bigger, blockier.

"I wasn't snatching purses or nothing." Defensive.

"Nah, I don't think I could fool anyone for very long. And, not just cause I have bigger guns." The red started to bleed out, black seeping back in naturally. He figured the smile from the kid meant things were cool and he could go back to what was comfortable on him. That red and blue never really fit right, even if he had spent his early teen years wishing for it.

Soon, he was all black death soldier from hell, but he didn't carry himself like he was going to bite this kid's head off. "Nah, man. I know. Relax, okay?" Flash shrugged and made a hand motion like he wasn't going to do anything. "What were you doing out here? Just painting for fun?"

The red washed out like darker paint stirred into water. It was real pretty, and maybe men weren't supposed to notice that kind of thing, but Jake's eyes lifted off the seeping, ink-trail black as it wound across all that red, and looked briefly at the 'bigger guns'. Wasn't a whole lot in it, far as he could see: newspaper-grainy photos didn't do a lot and it wasn't real natural for men to go on checking other men out.

The hell-beast was back by the time Jake was done cramming the paint-can back into the worn napsack, and he grinned, a brief flash of white in the orange street-light, because there wasn't nothing scary about it when the hell-beast wasn't looming over like something out of a bad movie late on a Saturday night at the only screen in town.

"Yeah," he scratched the back of his neck with two fingers sheepishly, ducked his head low enough that the thick fringe of hair fell into his eyes. "It was a real good canvas." Regret colored the response.

"Well, hey. Go ahead. If I hear cops coming, I'll warn you, okay?" Venom offered, rumbling into a goop ball before slingshotting up to a nearby tree. He slowly took form again. A hell monster crouched on the thickest branch of the tree. He looked out across the way and didn't see anyone and his Venom senses didn't catch a bead on anything either. He wondered if artist types couldn't art with some lumbering jackass watching, so he thought twice of it.

"Unless me watching is a pain in the ass? Then I'll just go, bro. I got other shit I could be doing anyway." Venom said from the trees, voice traveling easily in the strange quiet of late night NYC. He shifted his stance, letting part of him go completely liquid out of comfort.

Whatever it was he'd expected from a man showing up dripping like a gob of oil splashed onto a page, wasn't nothing about warning off cops. Jake's grin was surprised pleasure, real slow but bright and there wasn't nothing about lumbering jackasses that changed art, even if they were hell-monsters, stead of lumbering anything.

"Not a pain in the ass," he reassured the hell-monster, fascinated by the way he ran down to water real high up there. The goop didn't travel far, Jake figured maybe it was because it had to stay close enough to join back up.

He shook the paint-can until it clacked, and drew in an experimental figure on the backdrop of pop-art bright paint. The shape began, by degrees, to look an awful lot like the man on the tree-branch. Goop and all.

Flash had never stepped foot in an art gallery and he remembered generally being an ass in any art class he had to sit through. That said, once his father kicked him out of the house and the only people who would show him kindness were a bunch of school nerds (bronies), he was exposed to a lot of things he otherwise wouldn't give a damn about. Fan art, cosplay, anime, cartoons. The trash side of art, but it was still art. It still had validity to him and his new nerd friends. And, Flash mixed that in with his knowledge of comics until he found an appreciation for the stuff.

He sounded like water shifting, like a tiny wave lapping at the shore. Venom moved when Flash was to busy thinking to control it, bumps and wiggling worms up and down his bad ass armor until they stopped and blended back into his shoulders, arms and chest. "Nice." Flash said after a couple minutes of watching him paint, really pleased that it resembled him and his weird alien goop.

There weren't no art-galleries in Jake's home town. First time he'd ever seen art on walls, big and real and glistening with paint, instead of some print pinned down in glossy paper, it had been on the road. He'd been dirty and all over dust, and maybe too untidy for the big, white space but he'd stopped someplace they'd done a show all water and looked and looked at all that blue and purple and yellow and green until the place closed end of the night.

He heard the ripple of liquid and it didn't bother him any now he figured it was just the hell-beast (who wasn't anything out of hell, now he'd got to know him) and he looked at his own canvas, real critical. There wasn't nothing about art that was simple except the way it made you feel. The painting made him feel good, in a soft, petaled way in the center of his chest, and he grinned, running fingers through his bangs to shove them out of the way.

"Yeah. Looks cool."

There was something about seeing himself being painted. He hadn't experienced it before, even as Venom and it really made him feel like he was more than just a kid in a suit. A soldier that been taught by one of the most ruthless generals out there. It made him feel good too, but it was more like a tingling sensation on his arms, prickly on the back of his neck.

He watched for a little while longer, letting the sense of peacefulness come over him. And, then Venom hissed, sensing something going down a few blocks away. A quickie mart getting held up. Flash glanced up, isolating the sound. Gunshots. Shit. It was faint enough that even Jake could hear it. "I gotta go take care of that. Thanks man. This was hella zen." He saluted and then swung away.
